The "Зенит-18" is a single-lens reflex small-format automatic camera designed for a wide range of amateur photographers. It is used for various types of shooting on black and white and color film.

The design of the camera allows the use of interchangeable lenses with a М42x1 mounting thread and a flange focal distance of 45.5mm.

The "Зенит-18" has the following advantages:

• exposure is carried out by automatic shutter speeds; light is measured using the TTL system (through the lens) with the aperture of the standard lens fully open;
• multi-layer coating of the lens provides an increased degree of elimination of reflections (halos, glare and light spots);
• the viewfinder provides information about the approximate shutter speed that the camera will select automatically when the shutter is released, and about the lack or excess of illumination;
• lamella shutter with automatic electronic stepless shutter speed control from 1 to 1/1000 s and manual discrete setting of shutter speeds from 1 to 1/1000 s, "B" and "T";
• light indication provides a quick check of power supply elements;
• the frame counter is automatically reset when the back cover of the camera is opened;
• focusing is carried out using a combined focusing system (wedges, micro-pyramids, matte ring), which ensures maximum image clarity in various shooting conditions;
• the size of the image in the viewfinder is 95% of the sides of the frame on the film, which ensures the correct composition of the frame and is especially important when performing reproduction work;
• the eyecup allows for the installation of diopter lenses;
• the cocking lever has a starting position, which increases the efficiency of shooting;
• the self-timer allows the photographer to take a photo among friends or get a self-portrait;
• a simplified film loading system, a rewind handle and a retractable rewind button reduce the time spent on preparatory operations;
• the clip for fastening the flash lamp is equipped with a locking device that eliminates the risk of electric shock when connecting the flash lamp through the plug connector;
• the activation of the exposure meter is coupled with the shutter button and differentiated by force;
• the back cover lock is interlocked with a rewind handle;
• the eyepiece is equipped with a shutter.

The first Zenit with aperture-priority auto exposure mode. Differs from the Zenit-19 in exposure metering at fully open aperture. Very expensive and unreliable. Apart from the Zenitar-ME1, no special lenses with electrical contacts necessary to transmit the selected aperture value to the camera were produced. The location and number of contacts did not match those of the "electric" lenses in the similar Praktica system. In manual exposure mode, the match-needle system of the exposure meter did not work at all.

The camera was produced by the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant (USSR) from 1980 to 1987. In total, according to KMZ, only 7,001 bodies were produced.

The weight and dimensions are indicated for the camera body with the "МС Зенитар-МЕ1" standard lens.
