The "Зенит-16" camera is intended for various types of amateur and special photography and has a semi-automatic exposure metering device with internal light measurement. The camera has the following advantages:

• an instant-return mirror makes it possible to continuously observe the subject before and after exposure;
• the lens has a relatively high speed, which allows shooting in low light conditions;
• the lens is equipped with a jumping aperture mechanism that automatically closes when the shutter is released (mode "А"), and there is also the possibility of manual control of the aperture (mode "М");
• a fully open aperture at the moment of focusing ensures maximum brightness of the image in the viewfinder and, naturally, more accurate focusing;
• focusing can be carried out both on a micro-raster and on a matte surface, and the Fresnel lens ensures uniform image brightness across the entire field of the viewfinder;
• shutter speed of 1/1000 sec allows you to photograph fast-moving objects;
• when shooting with flash lamps, you can take photographs in the shutter speed range from 1/15 to 1/125 s;
• vertical movement of the shutter curtains ensures uniform exposure across the entire frame;
• a simplified film loading system, a rewind handle and a self-resetting frame counter reduce the time spent on preparatory operations.

Model radically different from what KMZ produced before and after. The outer shell is completely plastic and has straight contours. Most of the body is textured for a more secure grip. The back cover hinges downward. The shutter release button is located on the rear plate to the right of the viewfinder eyepiece and is designed to be pressed with the thumb rather than the index finger.

The shutter speed dial rotates smoothly, without clicks, since the shutter can handle intermediate speeds (however, exposure metering will not work at these speeds). There is no self-timer.

This was the first Soviet SLR camera with light indication of exposure in the viewfinder. The correctness of the exposure can be judged by two sub-miniature lamps: one indicating underexposure and the other indicating overexposure. If both light up, the exposure is set correctly.

Small experimental batches of the camera were produced by the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant (USSR) from 1972 to 1974, and from 1975 to 1977 production became serial. In total, according to KMZ, 11,124 bodies were released.
