CAMERA TYPE: 35mm single lens reflex with center-weighted averaging through-the-lens metering system.
FILM SIZE AND CAPACITY: 35mm perforated film in 20 or 36 exposure cassettes.
FILM FORMAT: 24mm x 36mm.
LENS MOUNT: Universal thread mount.
SHUTTER: Vertically moving metal Copal Square shutter with speeds from 1/1000th second to 1 second plus B (Bulb).
SELF-TIMER: Built-in variable timer with 7 to 15 second delay. Activated by shutter release button.
EXPOSURE METER: Two sensitive Cadmium Sulfide (CdS) cells located on either side of viewfinder eyepiece behind pentaprism read light coming through lens. Cross-coupled to shutter speed control and film speed dial. Metering emphasis is placed on central portion of the picture area as seen in viewfinder.
EXPOSURE CONTROL: Stop-down, match-needle system. Correct exposure indicated by aligning needle within exposure brackets in viewfinder.
EXPOSURE RANGE: EV 3 to EV 18 at ASA 100 (DIN 21) with Cosinon 55mm f1.4 automatic lens.
FILM SPEED RANGE: ASA 25 to 3200; DIN 15 to 36.
POWER SUPPLY: Single 1.35-volt Mercury battery (Mallory RM-675, Eveready E-675 or equivalent).
BATTERY TEST: Battery check light and button. Light glows red indicating sufficient power level.
SHUTTER RELEASE: Two-stage. Half pressure activates through-the-lens metering systems; stops lens down to shooting aperture. Full pressure activates shutter. Built-in lock lever.
VIEWFINDER: Fixed eye-level pentaprism type with silver coating to increase viewfinder brightness approximately 30%. Magnification 0.81X at infinity with Cosinon 55mm f1.4 lens. Field of view covers 93% of actual picture area (horizontal). Meter needle and exposure index brackets visible.
FOCUSING: Microprism center spot surrounded by ground glass area on Fresnel field for rapid focusing.
REFLEX MIRROR: Instant return type with front surfaced coating.
FLASH SYNCHRONIZATION: With Class "M" bulbs - 1 to 1/1000 second. With Class "F" and "FP" bulbs - 1 to 1/30 second. With Electronic Flash "X" - 1 to 1/125 second.

Universal Thread Mount.
Here is one of the keys to reducing the cost of a fine 35mm SLR camera system. Thousands of photographers already own a Universal thread mount lens (they fit Pentax, Praktica, Mamiya/Sekor, etc.). Vivitar cameras accept this mount. You don't have to buy expensive new lenses to fit a new mount. You have immediate access to the world's largest system of 35mm SLR accessories, available at competitive prices. To allow you to take full advantage of this choice, Vivitar SLR camera bodies and lenses are available for purchase separately. You can customize your own SLR system.
Choice of metering systems.
Camera manufacturers usually offer only one type of metering system, a center-weighted averaging meter. Vivitar offers a choice of three systems. You can choose the inexpensive 420/SL with a center-weighted averaging meter, the moderately priced 450/SLD with dual metering (separate spot and averaging meter systems), or the automatic 650/SLX which has the world's most advanced metering systems, complete with IC circuit, memory bank, silicon cells and more.
LENS-DB: Both the Cosina Hi-Lite EC II and the Vivitar 650/SLX, which was a rebadged version of the Cosina Hi-Lite EC II, were never produced.
Choice of shutter systems.
The 420/SL and the 450/SLD have the famous Copal Square shutter with speeds from 1 sec. to 1/1000th of a second. The 650/SLX has a stepless electronically controlled Copal Square shutter with speeds from 4 seconds to 1/2000th of a second. All Vivitar cameras have X-synchronization up to 1/125th of a second. Most shutters only X-synchronize to 1/60th of a second and limit the use of the camera with fill-in flash.
Choice of manual or automatic operation.
The 420/SL and the 450/SLD have a match-needle exposure system. The 650/SLX is an automatic camera with manual override. It also has the most sophisticated metering system including spot and average metering plus Spot Exposure Hold.
All three cameras have the latest convenience features. Built-in Hot Shoe • ASA range 25-3200 • Microprism with ground glass collar and Fresnel focusing screen • Silver coated pentaprism to increase light transmission approximately 30% • Battery test light (viewfinder LED in the 650/SLX) • Self-timer • Film in chamber indicator • Film clip with DIN/ASA conversion scale • Universal thread mount.
