Manufacturer description #1
Fastest of all Nikkor lenses, the 55mm f1.2 is designed to produce great pictures under all-but-impossible light conditions. Its ultra-high speed - 36% faster than the f1.4 - often means a vital extra margin for available light photography, in color as well as black and white. Anyone interested in this type of work will find the f1.2 a valuable additional lens for use primarily in such dim-light situations.
The 55mm f1.2 is one of the first Nikkor lenses featuring multi-layer-coated glass-air surfaces. This helps the lens achieve its impressive performance quality which is truly remarkable in view of its fantastic speed. It accepts the same 52mm diameter filters as most other Nikkors and focuses as close as 24 inches.
Manufacturer description #2
Featuring an f/1.2 aperture, this is the brightest among Nikkor Auto lenses. It incorporates the time honored high resolution characteristic of Nikkor lenses.
Despite its large aperture, aberrations are corrected to the highest degree. Flares are minimized to give a sharp image of outstanding contrast at full lens opening.
Thanks to the bright viewfinder image and shallow depth of field, focusing is rapid and precise.
Besides general photography, this lens is highly useful for indoor and outdoor color photography without flash.
From the editor
·C (multi-coated) version of this lens was introduced in October 1972. The specification is exactly the same as for the single-coated version.
Notes
- This non-AI lens was designed for Nikon F, F2, Nikkormat FS, FT, FT2, FTN, EL, ELW 35mm film SLR cameras.
- Non-AI lenses cannot be used on Nikon digital SLR cameras (except for the Df) or late (AI) film SLR cameras. However, non-AI lenses can be fitted to Nikon FM, FE, EL2, F3, F4 and Nikkormat FT3 cameras which used the AI metering system but allowed the metering coupling lever to be disengaged. The F5 could have this mechanism fitted as an optional extra. Non-AI lenses can be also fitted to the Nikon F2A and F2AS cameras because the AI mechanism was fitted to the removable metering prism.
