Manufacturer description
One of the fastest Nikkor wide angle lenses, the 35mm f/1.4 provides easy pinpoint focusing, even indoors in dim light. It offers 62° of picture coverage and extra depth-of-field for spur-of-the-moment "grab shots". A close-range correction system allows sharp pictures down to 12". It accepts 52mm filters; HN-3 lens hood.
From the editor
This lens was considered a standard choice for a good optical performance and Nikon's typical robust AI mechanical construction. It is relatively heavy at 400g, but the overall size is quite moderate. Many photographers used this wide-aperture f/1.4 lens as an alternative to the 50/1.4 normal lens. It is a good choice for a single prime travel lens, which can cover most outdoor scenics, people shots, interior photos, and low light situations.
Since a 35mm lens, unlike ultra-wides, is apt to be used close-in for group photos, portraits, etc., one should consider if an autofocus lens would be a better choice than the AI-S 35/1.4. Also, 35mm lenses are often used with electronic flash, and only lenses with AF-D capability or higher can take full advantage of Nikon's advanced flash metering.
