From the editor

A totally new lens with excellent manual as well as AF performance focusing from infinity to 22cm, where it gives a reproduction ratio of 1:1 at the minimum focus distance, with a working distance of just 7.3cm. There is a sliding switch on the lens barrel used to set two AF focus ranges to speed up AF operation.

Image quality is comparable to its shorter 55mm f2.8 predecessors, both manual and AF, in other words excellent in the range of f5.6 to f11, but below this image quality does deteriorate. Close focusing aside it is a good general-purpose optic, and it is particularly suited to copying flat artwork. However, this lens suffers from two drawbacks, the first concerns the effective focal length, which gets progressively shorter as you approach its minimum focus distance. The second is the very short working distance between the front of the lens and the subject at, or close to, 1:1 magnification. This often means that the lens can obstruct light from a flash unit or reflector from reaching the subject. Worse still is the risk that such close proximity might disturb a timid creature. The only remedy is to use a lens with a longer focal length.

Notes

  • The autofocus will not be available with Nikon D40, D40X, D60, D3000-D3500, D5000-D5600 digital SLR cameras.
