Manufacturer description #1

September 30, 2003 - Leica Camera Inc. is very pleased to announce a special, limited edition of the LEICA MP, commissioned by the Leica Historical Society of America (LHSA). The LEICA MP 0.72 LHSA 1968-2003 will be finished in a distinctive Gray Hammertone lacquer reminiscent of the gray Leica MD and M2 cameras produced in small numbers in the 1960's & now highly prized by Leica aficionados. To accompany the Leica MP 0.72 LHSA 1968-2003 in Gray Hammertone, Leica will also offer a matching Gray Hammertone Leicavit and gray Leica Summicron M 35mm f/2.0 ASPH lens. The camera, Leicavit and the lens, available individually, will bear a special LHSA engraving and the lens will be equipped with a vented metal lens hood in the same handsome Hammertone finish. The Leica MP 0.72 LHSA 1968-2003 will arrive in early 2004, with production restricted to just 1000 pieces. Camera, lens and Leicavit will be distributed worldwide through Leica's Authorized Dealer network.

Manufacturer description #2

Leica is presenting an MP special edition in honour of the 35th birthday of the Leica Historical Society of America (LHSA). Its surface finishing evokes the style of 1960s machinery and tools: top plate and base plate are given a grey Hammertone finish.

Leitz began to experiment with this unusual lacquer in the early 60s, producing a small number of special M cameras for internal use. Today they are known to be much sought after collector’s items. The Hammertone finish is defined by its extreme robustness and its slight variation on each camera.

In order to achieve the perfect, classic look, Leica applied the same “leather” cover material used on the 2000 0-series. In addition Leica offers a matching Summicron-M 35 mm/f2 Asph. in satin chrome finish with Hammertone lens hood and lens cap, as well as a corresponding Leicavit M winder.

LHSA’s delivery included, the special edition is limited to 1000 pieces for the worldwide market.
