Manufacturer description #1
Model IIIc has the same features as the Model IIIf except for the built-in synchronization (synchro-contact point; synchro-selector dial). The film speed indicator can be purchased for this model. One important difference of the Model IIIf and C's, should be noted: it is 1/8 inch longer than other models. Therefore, accessories which attach to the baseplate of the camera, in place of the regular baseplate, and which are designed for the other models, cannot be used on these late models. Another main distinguishing feature of the Model IIIf or IIIc is the arrangement of shutter speeds on the two speed dials. The top dial is calibrated from 1/30 to 1/1000 sec., and Z (Bulb). The slow speed dial, on front of the camera, is calibrated from 1 to 1/30 sec.
Manufacturer description #2
As model IIc, but with extended range of shutter speeds from 1 to 1/1000 sec. and time exposure. Serial No. from 360000.
From the editor
The Leica IIIc was introduced to the public in 1940. As an innovation, it had a one-piece top plate made of die-cast. This makes the camera 3mm longer than the previous models. The body shell was also a diecasting instead of a flattened tube which made it more rigid and allowed easier production in large numbers. The eyepieces of the viewfinder and rangefinder were located directly next to each other as with the IIIb. The diopter compensation was also located under the rewind button.
Since the camera was produced both before and after the war, there are slight differences between the copies. The body covering also varies: the "shark skin" cover was used in 1948/49.
Between 1940 and 1951, 133,626 units were produced in Wetzlar. In addition to the few gray-painted cameras, there were also chrome-plated units.
