Manufacturer description
Leaving the honorable AT-X abbreviation, the letter "i" was newly added. "i" stands for "interactive", implying mutual communication between photographer and the lens. This is our believe that this series will provide a tight bond between photographer and the lens in order to capture in the image that the photographer sees around.
Exterior, specifications and performance of Tokina's popular and well acknowledged so far AT-X PRO lenses are reconsidered with the contemporary cameras in mind and launched under atx-i brand.
The Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF MACRO is a compact medium tele macro lens for full frame format film and digital SLR cameras. Being light-weight, compact, performing high resolution, fast aperture, low distortion, low falloff and beautiful soft bokeh this lens is extremely attractive tool for macro, portraits, landscapes, street art, commercial and general purpose shooting.
To achieve an exceptional optical performance demanded for ultra wide angle zoom lens in still and video shooting purposes, two aspherical glass elements and two Super-Low Dispersion glass elements were used in order to minimize distortion, manage spherical aberration and astigmatism while achieving excellent edge-to edge resolution and contrast of the entire image. Great efforts were done to control light fall-off at all focal lengths.
The front of the lens has a 55mm filter threads which extends during the focusing but does not rotate. This allows different filters including polarizers to be used for landscape or product photography.
A focus range limiter switch on the side of the lens locks the lens focus into or out of the macro focusing range to avoid excessive AF hunting.
The direction of the manual focusing ring matches the proprietary direction of Nikon and Canon lenses.
The Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF MACRO Nikon F mount is equipped with manual aperture ring based on Ai AF Nikkor D-Type* lens standard that allows to use this lens with wide variety of cameras including old Nikon film cameras.
* When used with Nikon DSLRs that do not have a focus motor in the camera body like D3000 and D5000 series only MF mode is available.
High-Light Features:
- Compact and lightweight design.
- Life-sized (1:1) reproduction at 30 cm.
- Extremely high corner to corner resolving performance and almost zero distortion.
- Beautiful bokeh with almost circular-shaped background highlights for portrait shooting thanks to classical extending barrel focusing system.
- A focus range limiter switch for effective focusing routine.
- The direction of the manual focusing ring matches the proprietary direction of Nikon and Canon lenses.
- Manual aperture ring (Nikon F mount only) based on the standards of Ai AF Nikkor D-Type lenses to use with wide variety of cameras including old Nikon film cameras.
- One-touch focus Clutch mechanism to switch between autofocus and manual focus easy.
Due to classical extending barrel focusing system the lens creates magnificently soft bokeh in both the background and foreground. 100mm focal length is short enough to allow easy and natural communication with the model, creating a feeling of comfort and creativity. In combination with fast f/2.8 aperture the lens can be used in the widest variety of shooting settings both indoor and outdoor.
Incorporated 9 bladed diaphragm creates beautiful, almost circular-shaped background highlights up to f/5.6 with effectively surpassed longitudinal chromatic aberration.
We developed the Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF MACRO not just only for macro shooting. Challenge yourself in distant landscapes by using 100mm focal length to capture interesting object in the foreground and beautiful compressed landscape scenery in the background. The lens was designed for this shooting genre by realizing impressive color rendering and high resolution abilities.
The Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF MACRO incorporates all the necessary features and provides all the main advantages for dedicated macro shooters. The lens is capable of life-sized (1:1) reproduction at 30 cm. This allows photographers to have a little working distance from the subject and still obtain impressive magnification. Having some working distance is important when shooting easily startled subjects such as insects. Designed for full frame sensors, the focal length equivalent on a DSLR with an APS-C sensor turns to 150mm on Nikon camera and 160mm on Canon. This gives an advantage of shooting macro with 1.5x-1.6x larger magnification than a full frame camera.
Depending on purpose and the way of expression the Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF MACRO can be useful gear for close-up commercial video* and time-lapse shooting thanks to its excellent color reproduction if you film in LOG and exceptional sharpness.
* MF mode is suggested when shooting video.
Due to excellent macro abilities, constant aperture and manual focus ring (Nikon F mount) Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF MACRO is widely integrated for image processing and automatic inspection in Factory Automatization (FA) field.
Compactness and lightweight of the Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF MACRO are highly valued in implantology and esthetic dentistry for dental photography.
From the editor
The lens extends considerably with focusing from infinity to the closest distance. The front element is deeply recessed inside the lens barrel which eliminates the need for a lens hood. Nevertheless, Tokina offers deep circular lens hood as a part of the package.
Notes
- The autofocus will not be available with Nikon D40, D40X, D60, D3000-D3500, D5000-D5600 digital SLR cameras.
