Manufacturer description #1

Developed from PENTAX's pursuit of the ultimate visual expression, these two high-performance lenses offer the highest optical quality of all PENTAX interchangeable lenses. Featuring advanced technologies, such as special optical glass elements and PENTAX-original lens coatings, they are designed to assure exceptional optical performance and deliver clear, high-contrast images, even at image-field edges.

Designed to produce powerful telephoto images, the smc PENTAX-DA 300mm F4ED[IF] SDM is a uni-focal super-telephoto lens with a focal length equivalent to 460mm in the 35mm format. It minimizes chromatic aberrations — a common problem in telephoto lenses — by incorporating ED ( Extra-low Dispersion ) optical elements in its second and fifth lens. It also offers a minimum focusing distance of 1.4 m ( 4.6ft ), which is the shortest in its product category.

The smc PENTAX-DA 200mm F2.8ED[IF] SDM is a uni-focal telephoto lens with a focal length equivalent to 307mm in the 35mm format. With a maximum aperture of F2.8, it is ideal for indoor sports events and stage performances requiring fast shutter speeds to freeze action, and for portraits against a smooth, beautiful out-of-focus background. It also features ED ( extra-low dispersion ) optical elements in its second and fifth lens.

These two lenses also share the following features:

  1. An extra-short minimum focusing distance of 0.45 meters over the entire zoom range
  2. SDM mechanism, assuring extra-smooth, super-quiet autofocus operation using a supersonic motor installed in the lens ( Conventional autofocus operation using a camera-installed motor is also possible. )
  3. Dust-resistant, weather-resistant construction with a set of seals to prevent intrusion of dust and water into the lens
  4. Inner Focus mechanism for effective compensation of various aberrations at all focusing distances
  5. SP ( Super Protect ) coating applied to the front surface of the optics to block dust and dirt
  6. Quick-Shift Focus system for instant switching to manual-focus operation after the subject is captured in focus by the AF system

Manufacturer description #2

This telephoto lens incorporates top-level technology to match the highest photographic requirements. In terms of absolute resolving power the new 200mm lens from the PENTAX DA* series leaves nothing to be desired. The fast aperture design delivers outstanding results under the most unfavorable lighting conditions. High-quality ED lens elements reduce color aberrations to practically imperceptible levels and raise the recording quality to an absolutely brilliant level. As well as its optical benefits the smc DA* 200mm excels with handling ease: its ultrasonic focus operates extremely fast and silently, the inner focusing system effectively maintains the critical focal point and the special PENTAX SP coating of the front lens element efficiently prevents the adherence of dirt. Additionally, the lens body is completely sealed against spray and dust.

Manufacturer description #3

Telephoto lens equivalent to 307mm in the 35mm film format. The second and third lenses use ED glass for eliminating chromatic aberration and various other types of aberration to the utmost. The lens is characterized by a natural out-of-focus (bokeh) effect and imaging that presents fine shades even in shadows. An inner focus system is used to allow a minimum shooting distance of 1.2m. The lens also features outstanding delineation performance even for closeup photography. The surface of the first lens uses an SP coating to prevent adhering of dirt and oils.

Features:

  • Ultrasonic motor is used in the lens for providing an "SDM" mechanism that enables quiet and smooth autofocus operation. (AF driving by the internal camera motor is also supported.)
  • The lens components are sealed for enabling a dust-resistant and drip-proof construction that prevents the entry of water and dust into the lens.
  • An inner focus optical system is used for correcting various types of aberrations over the entire shooting range.
  • SP (super protect) coating for protecting the lens front surface from water and dirt
  • Quick-Shift Focus System for enabling manual focus operation after focusing by AF without any switching operation.

Pentax-DA series

The fourth generation of autofocus lenses designed for Pentax APS-C digital SLR cameras. Introduced with the Pentax *ist D in 2003.

  • Lens barrels made from engineering plastic;
  • Do not have an aperture ring. The aperture is controlled from the camera;
  • Automatic focusing using in-camera or in-lens motor;
  • Quick-Shift Focus System (except for DA L models).

From the editor

The smc Pentax-DA* 200mm F/2.8 ED [IF] SDM lens belongs to the Pentax DA* series of professional lenses. It became a welcome option for the owners of Pentax digital SLR cameras, as there were no models with comparable optical performance in the Pentax lineup at that time, except for the DA* 300/4 ED [IF] SDM. Optically the lens is not a completely new design: it is based on now discontinued FA* 200/2.8 ED [IF] full frame model.

Compared to other super telephoto prime lenses in the Pentax K APS-C system

  • Fastest speed (F/2.8)
  • Shortest closest focusing distance (1.20m)
  • Lightest weight (825g)
  • Shortest length (134mm)
