Manufacturer description
This lens is an Equisolidangle Projection type fish-eye lens which provides a 180-degree angle of view in any direction against the film plane.
The barrel of the lens has a professional-type anti-reflection finish called ZEN. This urethane resin surface is strong, hard, has excellent adhesion, and is resistant to chemicals, water and heat. The ZEN finish on the lens barrel creates a more comfortable and more secure non-slip feel, reduces reflections and resists scratches.
This lens uses a unique Bayonet Mount Filter Changing System. A 22.5mm filter is mounted at the rear of the front lens assembly. A NORMAL (clear) filter for general color and black-and-white photography is installed in the lens assembly. A Y-52 filter (yellow, for black-and-white portraits and scenes), O-56 filter (orange, for somewhat stronger effect than the yellow filter), and R-60 filter (red, for strong contrast and infrared photography) are supplied as standard equipment with this lens.
This lens is designed to deliver optimum performance with a filter in the lens assembly. Shooting without a filter in place may result in poor focusing or distorted image. A filter should be installed in the lens assembly at all times.
Typical characteristics of fisheye lenses
- Extreme angle of view (at least 180° diagonally);
- Circular types (the image circle of the lens is inscribed in the image frame) or diagonal types (cover the entire image frame);
- Usually of equidistant projection type, with the distance from the picture center to any given point always proportional to the angle from the optical axis to that point;
- Huge barrel distortion;
- Short closest focusing distance (0.20 - 0.30m with 35mm full-frame prime lenses);
- Very large depth of field, eliminating the need for autofocus or precise manual focusing;
- Due to the extreme angle of view and convex front element, front filters cannot be used;
- Often equipped with a filter turret with swivel-mounted filters;
- Often come with a small, built-in petal-shaped lens hood.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Sigma lens designation "ZEN" mean?
It means that the lens has a ZEN finish. ZEN is an acronym for Zeitgeist ("the spirit of the times"), Enhancement, and Nonglare. This nonreflective urethane resin finish was introduced around 1989 and replaced the old-style, painted satin-black finish. Sigma claimed it to be hard, strong, antichemical, nonslip, antiglare, and scratch-resistant, however, it actually had a tendency to peel off and become sticky as it aged.
