Manufacturer description

This circular fisheye lens produces circular images with an angle of view of 180° when attached to a full-frame digital or 35mm film SLR camera. It has a maximum aperture of F3.5, a minimum focusing distance of 13.5cm (5.3″) and a maximum magnification of 1:4.6. The special fisheye design allows maximum creative expression. Sigma’s super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, a common problem with digital cameras. Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass offer effective compensation of color aberration. Providing excellent image quality for digital and film SLR cameras. This lens can be used for the scientific applications such as the solid angle measurements of cloud distribution over the sky, the vegetation distribution of the rain forest canopy, etc., due to the quantifiable angle/area relationship it produces. This lens has a gelatin filter holder at the rear, allowing the use of gelatin filters.

Typical characteristics of fisheye lenses

  • Extreme angle of view (at least 180° diagonally);
  • Circular types (the image circle of the lens is inscribed in the image frame) or diagonal types (cover the entire image frame);
  • Usually of equidistant projection type, with the distance from the picture center to any given point always proportional to the angle from the optical axis to that point;
  • Huge barrel distortion;
  • Short closest focusing distance (0.20 - 0.30m with 35mm full-frame prime lenses);
  • Very large depth of field, eliminating the need for autofocus or precise manual focusing;
  • Due to the extreme angle of view and convex front element, front filters cannot be used;
  • Often equipped with a filter turret with swivel-mounted filters;
  • Often come with a small, built-in petal-shaped lens hood.

From the editor

Sigma offers a filter adapter as a part of the package. Essentially it is a ring that can be mounted on the front of the lens and accepts standard 72mm filters. Because of the extreme angle of view of the lens the filter adapter causes marginal vignetting.

Notes

  • The autofocus will not be available with Nikon D40, D40X, D60, D3000-D3500, D5000-D5600 digital SLR cameras.
