Manufacturer description #1
The great speed of this lens, added to the other advantages it shares with the 35mm f2.8, has earned it the highest respect of knowledgeable Nikon and Nikkormat users. Remarkably sharp, even at full aperture, it can be focused quickly and accurately thanks to the reduced depth-of-field. Closest focus is 12 inches.
Manufacturer description #2
A 35mm lens with a high-speed f/2 aperture makes this the "standard" choice among photographers, professional and amateur alike.
It is of the retro-focus type, with 8 elements in 6 groups. Its unique optical design eliminates coma and other aberrations to give a sharp picture of high contrast even at full lens opening.
The fast f/2 lens opening makes focusing rapid and precise even under adverse light conditions.
In perspective, this 35mm wideangle lens is close to the normal lens, offering "moderately" exaggerated perspective. Its picture angle is 62°.
With the smallest fall-off of brightness in picture corners, this is a standout among wideangles in its class.
The large f /2 aperture makes this lens highly effective for snapshots, indoor photography and instant candid work under poor light conditions.
Manufacturer description #3
A high speed lens of f/2 aperture with a 35mm focal length that is the most popular among wideangle lenses. This lens is of the retro-focus type, similar to the 35 mm f/2.8 Nikkor-S Auto. Its unique optical designing eliminates various aberrations, particularly the coma aberration, to extreme extents, thus, assuring a sharp picture of high contrast even at full aperture. The fall-out of brightness at picture corners rates the smalIest among similar lenses. The f/2 brightness is excellent for snapshots, indoor photography and 'instant' candid works under poor light conditions.
From the editor
The 35mm f2 is a classic design that offers a well-balanced compromise between speed, sharpness, freedom of vignetting, and compact size.
The lens carries the red "R" to indicate the IR focus point and has the small index marks against the aperture values similar to the 50mm f2.
·C (multi-coated) version of this lens was introduced in October 1973. The specification is exactly the same as for the single-coated version.
Notes
- This non-AI lens was designed for Nikon F, F2, Nikkormat FS, FT, FT2, FTN, EL, ELW 35mm film SLR cameras.
- Non-AI lenses cannot be used on Nikon digital SLR cameras (except for the Df) or late (AI) film SLR cameras. However, non-AI lenses can be fitted to Nikon FM, FE, EL2, F3, F4 and Nikkormat FT3 cameras which used the AI metering system but allowed the metering coupling lever to be disengaged. The F5 could have this mechanism fitted as an optional extra. Non-AI lenses can be also fitted to the Nikon F2A and F2AS cameras because the AI mechanism was fitted to the removable metering prism.
