Manufacturer description #1
An exceptionally fine telephoto, offering 6x magnification compared to the normal lens. All-over resolution and corrections are excellent even at full aperture. Ideal for nature and wildlife work as well as general telephotography. Closest focus is 13 feet. Automatic diaphragm and meter coupling are added advantages, as is the sliding lens hood.
Manufacturer description #2
This is the "remodeled" version of the 300mm f/4.5 Nikkor-P Auto lens. Emphasis was placed on improving its overall optical performance, especially to maintain good color balance.
Despite its long 300mm focal length, this lens has a short barrel (about 200mm), is light in weight (about 1 kg) and is considered to be the telephoto lens with the longest focal length that allows the average photographer hand-held shooting.
It features a fully automatic aperture diaphragm and a meter-coupling prong, and meets various requirements in action, sports and scenic photography.
Complete with a built-in sliding telescopic lens hood and a tripod socket.
From the editor
A second version of the 300mm f4.5 model with a completely new six-element design. Subsequent versions only have a number of cosmetic changes. In 1977 it was modified to the AI standard.
Notes
- This non-AI lens was designed for Nikon F, F2, Nikkormat FS, FT, FT2, FTN, EL, ELW 35mm film SLR cameras.
- Non-AI lenses cannot be used on Nikon digital SLR cameras (except for the Df) or late (AI) film SLR cameras. However, non-AI lenses can be fitted to Nikon FM, FE, EL2, F3, F4 and Nikkormat FT3 cameras which used the AI metering system but allowed the metering coupling lever to be disengaged. The F5 could have this mechanism fitted as an optional extra. Non-AI lenses can be also fitted to the Nikon F2A and F2AS cameras because the AI mechanism was fitted to the removable metering prism.
