From the editor

A classic old Nikon lens design that, with the AI-S version, is in its highly-refined fourth incarnation using the same super sharp optical formula. The reasonable if slightly unusual f/2.5 maximum aperture keeps size and weight (435g) down for a prime lens that is still quite fast. The big brother of this lens is the AI-S 105/1.8, which also has wonderful performance, but is much larger and heavier (580g).

The AI-S Nikkor 105/2.5 lens is an exquisitely manufactured and refined lens, with great optical performance, silky smooth manual focusing and aperture adjustment, and robust long-lasting construction.

Of course, these days, many photographers have moved from small prime lenses to standard autofocus zooms for many applications, either consumer grade or the professional f/2.8 trinity. A fast prime like the AF 105/2D is no doubt wonderful for portraiture, but among all the 105mm prime lens choices for travel photography, this AI-S 105/2.5 is one of the best.
