From the editor
The 85mm focal length is a very popular for Nikon, from the time of the Nikon F until today. The AF Nikkor 85 f/1.8D is a classic AF-D lens, and its construction is very robust for a lens of this type. The lens is relatively light, weighing only 380g, compared with 550g - 595g for the f/1.4 versions.
Focusing is extremely smooth and accurate, although obviously not as silky as its manual focus counterparts. The lens focuses internally, so the length does not change when you focus. Since this is an AF-D lens, it does not have an internal Silent-Wave Motor, although autofocus is extremely snappy using the autofocus motor in the camera body.
The lens takes a 62mm filter and the screw-on HN-23 hood. Unfortunately, the lens hood cannot be attached in the reverse position for storage, and is slightly fat when packed away in the camera bag or your pocket, but it provides very effective protection.
This lens is really useful as a portrait lens, with its short-telephoto focal length, quite fast maximum aperture, fast autofocus, and support for Nikon's 3D Matrix Metering (especially for flash). Since this is a D-type lens, it has an aperture control ring, which allows the aperture to be properly adjusted on any camera from the oldest mechanical Nikon body to the newest DSLR.
Notes
- The autofocus will not be available with Nikon D40, D40X, D60, D3000-D3500, D5000-D5600 digital SLR cameras.
