Manufacturer description #1
MELVILLE, N.Y., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Professional photographers and enthusiasts seeking the latest opportunity to expand their wide angle photographic possibilities can rely on Nikon's new AF Nikkor 14mm f/2.8D ED ultra wide angle lens.
Scheduled for delivery beginning in July 2000, this latest addition to Nikon's Professional Total Imaging System combines Nikon's unmatched optical performance with significant new capabilities. This fast ultra wide-angle lens offers great advantages when shooting interiors, real estate, landscape or special effects photos. Digital users will appreciate a 90 degree angle of view with the Nikon D1, adding exciting visual perspective to their photography. A dramatic 114 degree angle of view is achieved with 35mm SLR cameras.
The AF Nikkor 14mm f/2.8D ED optical formula is highlighted with Nikon's Extra Low Dispersion glass and two aspheric lens elements. This design is of critical importance to wide-angle users as it adds to superior image quality, minimizes distortion and chromatic aberration, and contributes to reduced weight and compact size. Image quality for both 35mm film and the D1 digital SLR's CCD sensor will excel, while the very wide field of view adds extra dimension for wide area coverage.
Using Nikon's time-honored F Lens Mount, featuring a triple-claw bayonet and reliable electro-mechanical interface, along with its f/2.8 fast aperture, the 14mm AF Nikkor further complements the D1 Professional Digital SLR and all Nikon film SLR cameras. Together with a built-in flower-type lens hood, Nikon's Super Integrated Coating diminishes flare, minimizes ghosting, enhances contrast and provides excellent color balance.
In addition, this new high performance lens features a rectilinear design rendering images that are amazingly true and undistorted. Its rear focus design provides fast and smooth AF operation, and D-type design delivers distance information as part of the flash and ambient light exposure process.
The lens also includes Nikon's built-in CPU, a vital asset that communicates with compatible Nikon SLR models and Speedlights. These combine to support Nikon's 3D Matrix Metering System and 3D Multi-sensor Balanced Fill-Flash technology. All Nikon's 3D Matrix Meters are supported, including the exclusive Nikon 3D Color Matrix Meter featured in the Nikon F5 and D1 models. The new 14mm f/2.8D ED features an A/M Switch providing convenient quick shifting from automatic to manual focusing. Filtering is possible using an integrated gelatin filter holder.
Nikon's new AF Nikkor 14mm f/2.8D ED ultra wide angle lens is destined to become a favorite with enthusiasts and professionals alike.

From the editor
The widest rectilinear prime lens in the Nikon’s lineup. It is especially effective for photographing buildings or small interiors where photographer cannot get enough distance to include everything in the frame. The speed of F/2.8 is another undoubted advantage when taking photos of interiors. It also provides a brighter optical viewfinder image and therefore ensures convenient focusing.
The front lens cap is of slip-on type, made of faux leather and is mounted directly on the built-in lens hood.
It is interesting that the optical formula of this lens is identical to the Tamron SP AF 14mm F/2.8 Aspherical (IF) 69E lens.
Notes
- The autofocus will not be available with Nikon D40, D40X, D60, D3000-D3500, D5000-D5600 digital SLR cameras.
