Manufacturer description #1
08 - 08/2000 - New at the Photokina: Leica Summicron-M f/2/28 mm ASPH.
The Leica Summicron-M f/2/28 mm ASPH. being launched by Leica Camera AG is a new, super fast wide-angle lens with excellent imaging performance in an ultra compact design. Despite being twice as fast as the successful Leica Elmarit-M f/2.8/28 mm, it has the same diameter and, weighing 270 grams, is only 10 grams heavier. The 28 mm focal length particularly popular for press photography can now be used in extremely difficult light situations as well. The new lens takes advantage of a key strength of the Leica M rangefinder system camera: its use as an available light camera, due to other qualities besides high-speed lenses, such as the radiantly clear viewfinder image, the high-precision focusing and the vibration-free shutter release.
At full aperture already, the lens performs homogeneously well over the whole image field. Even at the largest aperture of 2.0, brilliance and resolution equal the high standard of the Leica Elmarit-M f/2.8/28 mm. Compared with this field-proven lens, distortion in the new Summicron has been reduced even further by 15% to a negligible amount for practical purposes. The vignetting of the new lens is extremely slight; from f/5.6 onwards there is only natural vignetting. Even in twilight or dim rooms, the Leica Summicron-M f/2/28 mm ASPH. guarantees finely differentiated, pin-sharp exposures, which makes it an indispensable companion for Leica M photographers.
The new 28mm lens consists of nine elements in six groups. Three of these lens elements are made of highly refractive glass and three others of glass with partial anomalous dispersion. One element has an aspherical surface which largely accounts for the lens's extremely compact design. The unchanged diameter enables a practically unobstructed view of the viewfinder image. This and the fact of its low weight makes it ideal for travelling light or for professional use in difficult reportage conditions.
The new Leica Summicron-M f/2/28 mm ASPH. is an excellent partner for the new Leica M6 TTL 0.58. Together, they enable a new standard of performance in wide-angle photography.
The new lens will be on sale in Leica photo shops from February 2001.
Manufacturer description #2
Virtually no other camera is so frequently cited as reference in available light photography as the Leica M. To give the M System even greater versatility in difficult light situations, the popular 28mm focal length with an even faster speed was added to the line of Leica Summicron high speed lenses: the outstanding LEICA SUMMICRON-M 28 mm f/2 ASPH. By means of an extremely complex optical computation, the use of special types of optical glasses and the inclusion of a lens element with an aspherical surface, it was possible to create a lens with outstanding performance that is in no way below that of the excellent performance of the LEICA ELMARIT-M 28 mm f/2.8. As a matter of fact, it even surpasses it.
Considering the fact that the new lens is one full stop faster than the LEICA ELMARIT-M 28 mm f/2.8, it is all the more remarkable that the designers were able to keep the dimensions and the weight of the new lens is virtually the same as that of the older lens. Outstanding imaging performance across the entire field, with uniformly high resolving power and brilliance make this lens an indispensable companion, especially in difficult light situations. Whether in twilight or in poorly illuminated rooms, the LEICA SUMMICRON-M 28 mm f/2 ASPH. produces optimal results, even at full aperture and it captures the genuine mood of a scene entirely without the use of flash or of a tripod. When the work is done, it can easily be tucked away in the leather case that comes with it, ready for new photographic challenges.
Manufacturer description #3
Very fast wide-angle lens recommended for reporting and available light photography such as twilight or in dimly lit interiors. Uncompromised image quality, even at full aperture. Thanks to a sophisticated optical formula, in which special types of glass and an aspherical surface were used, the dimensions and the weight are almost identical to the 28mm f/2.8 even though it is one stop faster.
Manufacturer description #4
This fast wide-angle lens is especially compact and its imaging performance is outstanding at f/2. The rendition of the finest details results in pictures with an extraordinary depth effect. Even in critical lighting conditions, for example in backlit situations, distracting reflections and flare are largely eliminated. Because of its large aperture of f/2, it can also be used for selective sharpness settings in the wide-angle range. And when pictures are to be taken without flash under unfavorable light conditions at twilight or in sparsely illuminated rooms, this lens is highly recommended.
