Manufacturer description #1
September 10, 1998
The EF 35mm f/1.4L USM lens is a large diameter wide-angle lens with f/1.4 capability that optimises subject brightness, so is ideal for low light conditions.
The lens uses a polished aspherical lens element along with a floating element to provide outstanding image definition over the entire image area. In total, 11 elements are used in 9 groups.
A wide focusing ring offers easy manual focusing while a ring USM and rear focusing provide silent, high-speed autofocus.
Minimum focusing distance is 0.3m, while maximum magnification is 0.18x
Available from 1st November 1998. The EF35mmf/1.4L USM has an RRP of £1,199.99.
Manufacturer description #2
This 35mm wide-angle lens features a brightness of f/1.4, the largest aperture in its class, and the superior natural delineation only possible with an L series lens. It uses Canon's advanced floating mechanism and a ground aspherical lens for the ninth element that achieves extremely sharp, distortion-free, superb picture quality from infinity to close shooting distances. With Ring USM powered rear focus, autofocusing is silent and fast. The wide, full-time manual-focusing ring provides a comfortable operating feel.
Manufacturer description #3
This lens boasts the brightness of the largest aperture in its class. Its 9th element is a ground aspherical lens that thoroughly eliminates spherical aberration and distortion. It achieves extremely sharp, faultless picture quality only possible with a single focal length lens. A floating mechanism maintains the lens’s superior image quality from infinity to the closest shooting distance of 0.3m/1ft. The non-rotating filter mount provides easy operability with circular polarizers and other types of filters.
From the editor
Lenses with focal length of 35mm and large maximum apertures are especially popular among photojournalists, videographers and wedding photographers. The Canon EF 35/1.4L USM lens was designed for professional use - mainly for available and low-light shooting, however you can also use it in any lighting conditions. It offers exceptionally high optical performance at any focusing distance and is considered as one of the best Canon’s lenses together with the EF 85/1.2L II USM and EF 135/2L USM lenses.
Compared to other wide-angle prime lenses in the Canon EOS system
- Fastest speed (F/1.4), along with 3 other models
- Longest closest focusing distance (0.30m), along with 2 other models
- One of the heaviest (580g)
