Manufacturer description

A 21st century update to a popular and widely used fixed focal length lens, the Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM is a fixed focal length wide-angle 28mm lens equipped with Canon Optical Image Stabilizer technology, superb image quality and performance perfect for use in any number of photographic applications. Sharp, clear images are easy with an Optical Image Stabilizer that offers up to 4 stops of shake correction while a ring-type USM and advanced CPU with optimized AF algorithms enable faster auto focusing. Aspherical lens elements help improve image quality on the periphery and lens coatings help minimize ghosting and flare. A 7-blade circular aperture diaphragm delivers beautiful, soft backgrounds. Compact and lightweight with outstanding lens performance, it's the perfect lens to go with any EOS DSLR camera whether shooting stills or video.

From the editor

A wide-angle lens for 35mm SLR cameras is one with a focal length less than 43mm. Modern wide-angle lenses range from medium wide-angle (35mm) with slightly wider angle of view than normal, to ultra-wide angle (14mm) perfect for shooting in confined spaces. Common focal lengths in between are 28, 24 and 20mm.

Wide-angle lenses affect perspective of the image, making foreground objects appear larger in the frame and distant objects smaller, and exaggerate the distance between objects, making objects at far distances seem further away than they are. Wide-angle lenses also offer greater depth of field compared to normal lenses with similar apertures.

Lens speed is not a big factor for wide-angle lenses since the subject (such as landscape, building or interior) does not move. In order to increase depth of field and maximize image quality, landscape and architectural photography should be done at considerably closed down aperture (typically F/11 or F/16), and at the lowest native ISO setting (usually ISO 100). However, for smaller subjects (such as cars, trees, people etc.) that do not always require large depth of field, a faster maximum aperture of a wide-angle lens (for example, F/2 or F/1.4) is an advantage for shooting in low-light conditions and/or blurring of background elements.

The requirements for an “ideal” wide-angle lens include:

  • excellent sharpness across the frame at least by F/2.8 (a minimum aperture where depth of field is usable for traditional wide-angle photography),
  • good color rendition and excellent contrast across the frame,
  • minimal barrel distortion with regular pattern that is easy to correct in post-processing,
  • minimal level of lateral chromatic aberrations,
  • excellent resistance to flares,
  • acceptable “drawing” style and non-distracting background blur at large apertures,
  • moderate weight and dimensions,
  • reasonable price-performance ratio.

A wide-angle lens which meets all the above requirements is a rarity. Most current wide-angle lenses are actually examples of how a good performance in one area is achieved at the expense of good performance in the other. The Canon EF 28mm F/2.8 IS USM lens and the Canon EF 35mm F/2 IS USM lens, however, are one of those lenses that meet the requirements perfectly and their only drawback is actually a noticeable vignetting wide open.

The Canon EF 28mm F/2.8 IS USM lens is an update of the popular Canon EF 28mm F/2.8 lens (1987). It is a world’s first 28mm wide-angle prime lens to feature Image Stabilizer which makes it ideal both for landscape photography and reportage. Large maximum aperture combined with Image Stabilizer enables sharp results when shooting handheld, even in low-light conditions. The lens is also ideal for shooting fast-moving subjects due to the ability of Image Stabilizer to detect intentional panning movement and automatically switch from Mode 1 to Panning mode. The lens has the following advantages over non-IS version:

  • improved optical design with rear focusing,
  • smaller closest focusing distance (0.23m compared to 0.3m),
  • USM with FTM (older version has AFD without FTM),
  • better build quality.
