Manufacturer description #1

The EF 28mm f/2.8 is the most affordable wide-angle lens in the Canon line, making it quite attractive for beginning photographers. An excellent choice for group shots and landscapes, the 28mm f/2.8 is also faster, lighter, and smaller than zoom lenses. This lens is quite sharp and exceptionally low in flare, due to a Canon-exclusive glass-molded aspherical (GMO) front element. The full-extension focusing system is driven by an AFD motor and features a non-rotating 52mm filter thread.

Manufacturer description #2

Incorporation of a glass-molded aspherical lens element enables use of a simple yet effective 5-element, 5-group lens construction. This results in an extremely compact, lightweight optical system which achieves super-fast autofocusing with an extension type focusing system, while delivering sharp, high-contrast image quality. Distortion is virtually nonexistent, making this lens ideal for architectural photography and other scenes containing straight lines.

From the editor

One of the first lenses for the Canon EOS system (please refer to the article dedicated to the Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 lens for more information on family of Canon’s lenses introduced in 1987-1990). An affordable lens with good optical characteristics. Still could be a good choice for those who prefer prime lenses. But if you usually shoot in available and low- light conditions, the Canon EF 28mm F/1.8 USM lens (1995) could be the alternative consideration for you.

Compared to other wide-angle prime lenses in the Canon EOS system

  • Slowest speed (F/2.8), along with 4 other models
  • Longest closest focusing distance (0.30m), along with 2 other models
  • Smallest magnification (1:7.7)
  • One of the lightest (185g)
  • Smallest filter size (52mm), along with 2 other models
