Manufacturer description #1
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., October 30, 1997 - Canon continues to expand its line of EOS System lenses with the introduction of the EF 24mm f/1.4L USM wide-angle lens. This marks the first EF lens to incorporate both a replicated aspherical lens element to suppress distortion and spherical aberrations, and an Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lens element to dramatically reduce lateral chromatic aberrations.
Designed as a premier lens in a very popular lens category, especially among photojournalists, the EF 24mm f/1.4L USM's fast aperture enables photographers to shoot under extreme lighting conditions, while providing an opportunity for faster shutter speeds under normal lighting conditions. Image quality with this new L-series lens is outstanding, even wide-open at f/1.4. In addition, the lens includes Canon's exclusive ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) for high-speed silent AF with full-time manual focus override and smooth operation. The new EF 24mm f/1.4L USM lens was developed for photographers who have a tremendous need for a fast, durable and high-quality wide-angle lens. While all kinds of photographers will benefit from the features of the new lens, photojournalists and news photographers will find the lens to be invaluable in their work.
Unlike most conventional wide-angle lenses, the front lens group in the EF 24mm f/1.4L USM is fixed and does not rotate during focusing. As a result, polarizing and special effects filters do not need to be adjusted after focusing. The new lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.8 inches and a maximum magnification of 0.16x. It is also the first Canon L-Series lens to be constructed completely from lead-free glass. The Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM lens weighs 19.4 ounces and measures 3.1 inches long. It will be available in November.
Manufacturer description #2
Canon expands its line-up of wide-angle L-series lenses with the new EF 24mm f/1 .4L USM, a modern update of a classic FD system lens with even better performance than the original. This is the first L lens to feature both the UD and aspherical lens elements. The system is designed to provide excellent optical performance appropriate for both large aperture f/1.4 and L lenses. The UD lens, which is located in the fifth position, suppresses the occurrence of lateral chromatic aberration, a common problem with wide-angle lenses. It also reduces blurring of colors on the edge of the subject to achieve high resolution and contrast. A replicated aspherical lens, in position nine, compensates for distortion and spherical aberrations. The adoption of a floating mechanism achieves consistently high image quality, from the minimum distance of 0.25m to infinity. Ring USM and a rear focus system combine to provide quick and quiet autofocusing. Superior ease of use features includes full-time manual focusing even in the AF mode, a nonrotating filter thread and a detachable bayonet-mount petal-type lens hood.
Manufacturer description #3
The fastest wide angle L lens in its class with excellent definition. The first EF lens uses a ground and polished aspherical glass lens element and a UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass lens element simultaneously, in order to achieve a large f/1.4 aperture and superb optical performance of a L lens at the same time. The floating optical system provides high image quality over the entire focusing range. This is the first L lens with lens elements, made of only ecologically sound lead-free glass. A ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) and rear focus system offer silent, high-speed AF. A full-time manual focusing and a non-rotating filter frame provide excellent operability. A petal-shaped lens hood comes with the lens.
From the editor
A professional wide-angle lens that was introduced quite late (1997) in the Canon EOS system. It was Canon’s first 24mm lens that offered USM with FTM - its older counterpart Canon EF 24mm F/2.8 lens (1996) only has AFD without FTM. The lens was designed mainly for available and low-light shooting, however you can also use it in any lighting conditions. Ask yourself if you really need the maximum F/1.4 aperture of this wide-angle lens for the lighting conditions in which you normally shoot.
Compared to other wide-angle prime lenses in the Canon EOS system
- Fastest speed (F/1.4), along with 3 other models
- Largest filter size (77mm), along with the Canon EF 24/1.4L II USM
