Manufacturer description #1
From the LEICA photography magazine (Fall 1951, Vol. 4, No. 3):
THE NEW LEICA IIf CAMERA
Of particular interest to the Leica flash photography fan is the addition of the new Leica IIf to the line.
Leica built-in synchronization for flash has received wide acclaim and acceptance since the introduction of the Leica IIIf last winter.
The Leica IIIf incorporates all the features of the now discontinued IIc (speeds from 1/30 to 1/500 and Bulb) plus built-in synchronization at all shutter speeds and for all flash bulbs and strobe, and the film winding knob that "remembers" the speed of the film in the camera.
Slow speeds can always be added for an additional cost of $96 to make the IIf a IIIf.
Manufacturer description #2
They only differences you will find between the II f and III f are in the automatic shutter speeds below 1/25th, and the built-in self-timer. The II f has neither. But you can add both these features later, any time you want, to convert your II f to a III f. You may prefer the II f as a "first" Leica, since it gives you renowned Leica precision and performance at a saving.
Choice of interchangeable lenses in screw mounts from 35 mm to 400 mm; twin-eyepiece for built-in, coupled range finder with 1.5 X magnification, and viewfinder for 50 mm lenses; focal plane shutter with speeds from 1/25th to 1/1000th and "Bulb"; synchronized for electronic and conventional flash; coupled film transport and shutter winding; film-type reminder; semiautomatic exposure counter.
Manufacturer description #3
Chrome finished housing, covered in leather grained vulcanized fabric with eyelets for neckstrap, lens changing flange ring, built-in viewfinder and coupled rangefinder, with 1.5x telescope system, twin eyepieces for rangefinder and viewfinder, focal plane shutter with speeds from 1/25 to 1/500 of a second and "bulb". Synchronized for all flash and zero delay electronic units, with adjustable synchro-dial for all shutter speeds and synchro-contact. Film speed indicator built into the winding knob for both A.S.A. and Weston ratings.
Manufacturer description #4
Similar to Model If, but with built-in precision rangefinder, with magnifying telescope system, twin viewing device for both range and viewfinder, built-in synchronization for all flash bulbs and zero delay strobe units, and with film speed indicator built into the winding knob which "remembers" the type of film in the camera in both ASA and Weston ratings.
Manufacturer description #5
The Leica IIf differs from the IIIf in its range of shutter speeds (from 1/25th to 1/1000th second and "bulb") and by not having a built-in self-timer. A detachable self-timer is available as an accessory. The IIf is the ideal camera for all around photography if you do not need the slower shutter speeds, but here again an accessory is available for obtaining slow speeds. You can have your IIf converted at any time to include the features of the IIIf camera.
Manufacturer description #6
Black synchronizing dial, available from 1951: as model II c, but with built-in full flash synchronization, film indicator built into the film winding knob. Serial No. from 451000.
Red synchronizing dial, available from 1952: As above, but with international shutter speeds 1/25, 1/50 to 1/1000 sec. and time exposure. Serial No. from 574401.
From the editor
The IIf was manufactured in Wetzlar from 1951 to 1956. A total of 35,091 units were made: mostly in chrome finish, however a small batch in black finish was also produced for the Swedish army. Early cameras did not have the 1/1000s shutter speed, which became available as standard from 1954.
