BUILT-IN RANGE FINDER with Automatic Focusing

More Accurate Than Ground-Glass Focusing

THE NEW MODEL D

With F:3.5 Lens and one magazine

Again LEICA Revolutionizes Camera Design

No more guess work in focusing - no more blurred pictures. Now you can get perfect focus instantly. Simply sight your subject through the built-in range finder, turn the lever attached to the lens until your view is sharp and clear, then snap! Faster and more convenient to operate than any other type of focusing camera. Even speed pictures can be caught instantly with perfect focus. The LEICA Built-in Range Finder is the newest of the many remarkable features of the LEICA Camera.

7 interchangeable Lenses

make the LEICA the most versatile camera ever known. Think of it - a camera weighing less than a pound, easily carried in the pocket, yet instantly convertible into a speed camera, a portrait camera, a telephoto camera, an aerial camera, and many more. The new fast f:1.9 lens now makes night pictures indoors possible, too. The most unusual pictures are easy to take with the LEICA, even under difficult light conditions. Economical - takes up to 36 pictures on a single roll of cinema film. Enlargements up to 12 x 18 inches are marvelously sharp and clear.

Manufacturer description #2

Model II Leica Camera (also known as the Model D) has only one shutter speed dial on top of the camera, which provides speeds from 1/20 to 1/500 sec. and Z (Bulb). It was supplied with both bottom and top plates in either satin chrome or black lacquer finish. It does not have eyelets, for carrying strap on either side of the body.

Manufacturer description #3

Black enamelled or chromium finished, with built-in coupled rangefinder, focal plane shutter 1/20 to 1/500 sec. and time exposure. Serial No. from 71500.

Manufacturer description #4

In 1932 the Leitz Company introduced the Model D LEICA, which has since come to be known as the AUTOFOCAL LEICA. This model incorporates a focusing device which is acknowledged to be the finest in design and principle, and was met with acclamation. It was an instantaneous success to put it mildly.

The model D LEICA is basically the same as the models F and G, but lacks a few of the latters' refinements. For instance, the model D's range of shutter speeds is from 1/20 to 1/ 500th of a second only. The range finder does not possess the 1 1/2X magnifier in the eyepiece. For those who do not require the slow and extremely fast shutter speeds, the model D makes an ideal camera.

Manufacturer description #5

The Model D LEICA is not to be considered superseded by the Model F. There is a demand for this model, just as there is for the Model F, because indications seem to point to the fact that some photographers have no special need for the refinements which are to be found on the Model F LEICA.

Needless to say, the Model D may at any time desired be converted into the Model F, therefore the possession of a Model D does not indicate that its owner cannot possess a Model F, should he later find that the slower speeds are necessary or desirable.

From the editor

The Leica II differs significantly from the previous Leica I model by the integrated rangefinder directly coupled to the lens. This makes it possible to control the focusing on the lens through the additional small viewfinder window. It works accurately up to a distance of 100m and supports focal lengths from 35mm to 135mm.

The Leica II was produced from 1932 to 1948 in black lacquered (36,936 units) or chrome-plated finish (15,573 units), a total of 52,509 units. The cameras were equipped with either chrome-plated or nickel-plated controls. The matching Elmar 50mm f/3.5 lens was also manufactured in chrome or nickel-plated variants.
