Manufacturer description #1

The Yashinon-DX 21mm lens offers an entree into the fascinating realm of ultra-wide-angle photography. With a field of view of 92 degrees, this lens affords maximum coverage from a minimum range and produces an effect which cannot possibly be obtained with other optics. Being perfectly compensated for astigmatism as well as curvature of the field, it assures even brightness and sharpness throughout the picture area, even up to the remotest corners. Though its characteristic quality of exaggerating the perspective, it produces an impression of extensive "depth", thereby injecting a dynamic effect into the pictures. This ultra-wide-angle lens is recommended for architectural photography or for shooting subjects indoor, particularly in places where there is very little leeway for backing away.

Manufacturer description #2

The lens is mounted with the mirror locked in flip-up position and the subject is sighted by using the exclusive viewfinder which comes with the lens. For greater area coverage, extended range of sharpness and extreme perspective effect. Ideal for photographing gatherings, parties, weddings and such other events.

Because the ultra-wide angle Yashinon-DX 21 mm lens provides an exceptionally wide coverage, an exclusive vewfinder is supplied. To determine the field covered by this lens, sight through this viewfinder.

This lens also assures an extensive depth-of-field. When focused at a range of 4 meters and the aperture is set at f/4, all objects within the range of 2 meters and infinity will appear sharp and crisp on the film plane.

From the U.S. Camera and Travel magazine (1967)

Chicago Trade Show

The Yashinon/DX 21mm is a manual diaphragm type which is useable only on the Yashica TL-Super and other threaded cameras with mirror lockup. Another new piece of glassware is the Auto-Yashinon/DX 28mm f/2.8 with a 75° angle of coverage. The third new lens is an Auto-Yashinon/DX 300mm with a speed of f/5.6. The fourth, the Yashinon/DX Automatic Zoom, is a 75-230mm zoom lens with a fully automatic diaphragm.

From the Camera 35 magazine (December 1967/January 1968)

Not only is this brand new lens the fastest of all the whole 21mm crowd, it also has something else going for it... contrast plus sharpness. When you add compactness and its very reasonable price, the total picture is a very impressive one. This is of the mirror lock-up variety, and it can be used on many other SLR cameras besides the Yashica. If you are on the lookout for a 21mm lens with this type of mount, look no further. It is unlikely you will find a better combination. The Yashica engineers should be congratulated!

Notes

  • Because of the special construction of the mirror, the following Yashinon interchangeable lenses cannot be mounted on the Yashica Electro AX camera: Yashinon-DX 21mm F/3.3, Yashinon-DX 28mm F/2.8, Yashinon-DX 50mm F/2, F/1.7, F/1.4. All other lenses can be used most effectively.
  • The lens was designed for use with 35mm film SLR cameras with the mirror locked in the up position.
