With a 35mm equivalent focal length of 61-64.5mm (depending on sensor size), the lens is halfway between a standard and a short telephoto lens. When it comes to shooting landscapes or architecture, a standard lens will be more practical due to its wider field of view. A short telephoto lens will do better with portraits, since lenses of this class are optimized specifically for this genre of photography: they have a faster speed, allowing you to achieve a smooth, stronger and more pleasant background blur and subject isolation at portrait focusing distances of 1.5-2m. Macro lenses, on the other hand, are optimized for close-ups at very short focusing distances, and are not optimized for bokeh. In other words, don't think of this TTArtisan as a replacement for a standard or short telephoto lens, and you will not regret the purchase.
It seems that this lens will find its best use for its intended purpose, as a macro lens. With a closest focusing distance of 0.17m you get a magnification of 1:1, which is very good for a macro lens intended for amateur photographers. It is important to know that this lens does not have internal focusing, so the front part of the barrel extends significantly when approaching the closest focusing distance. While you're unlikely to be able to capture insects with this lens (the front rim will be only 3cm away from them at 0.17m), stationary objects like flowers or food can be captured in all their glory.
This lens cannot be called compact or lightweight, but it has good build quality and the lens barrel is made of metal.
The lens accepts 52mm screw-in filters. The front element is recessed deep into the lens barrel, as with many other macro lenses, so the TTArtisan 40/2.8 does not require an accessory lens hood.
