From the editor
A large, heavy, ultra-fast standard lens with an optical design (15 elements in 10 groups) that rivals zoom lenses. A flagship model, which is primarily intended to demonstrate the optical capabilities of the new, previously unknown manufacturer SongRaw, and for this reason is not always practical. (One of the commentators on DPReview joked that the next lens will be the SongJpeg 50/1.8. Well, as they say, there's only a grain of truth in every joke)
Judging by the sample photos provided by the manufacturer, the Moonlit 50/1.2 is primarily positioned as a portrait lens. However, this is not surprising: with a weight of 900g, it is unlikely that any photography enthusiast would dare to take this standard lens with them on a walk or as the only lens for travel photography. As for portrait photography, shooting in this genre is facilitated by the lens speed, which makes possible a shallow depth of field and a very smooth, eye-pleasing background blur. When stopping down, 13 aperture blades will keep the out-of-focus highlight's a more rounded shape. Night photography enthusiasts will also appreciate the maximum speed of this lens, as it does not require raising the ISO too high.
The lens is equipped with a stepping motor to ensure quiet and fast automatic focusing. The closest focusing distance is only 0.52m. In practice, when shooting portraits (head and shoulders / head and chest), focusing distances of 1.5-2m are considered optimal. The maximum magnification is only 1:7.7, so you shouldn't count on shooting small objects close-up.
The lens accepts large 72mm screw-type filters and comes with a large round bayonet-type lens hood.
The Sony E mount version will be released first, with Nikon Z and Leica L mount versions to follow later.
