Abbreviations
SMC | Multi-layer anti-reflection coating is applied to the surfaces of lens elements. This anti-reflection coating increases light transmission, eliminates flare and ghosting, and maintains color consistence among all lens models. |
M | A manual focus lens with automatic maximum aperture indexing, which is a mechanical system for coupling the lens to the camera's exposure system. More compact and lighter than the standard K-series counterpart, but with no sacrifice in quality of construction, resolution, durability or contrast. Learn more |

Manufacturer description #1
The incredible standard lens everyone is speaking about. A mere 18mm in depth and 110g in weight, it represents the ultimate in compactness. Moreover, offering 10° more coverage than a 50mm lens, it is extremely versatile.
Manufacturer description #2
From the Pentax MV booklet:
One might think it is convenient enough that the MV is one of the world's smallest and lightest SLRs. But, those who purchase it with the new incredible SMC Pentax-M 40mm "pancake" standard lens will find that it also offers the extra convenience of "pocketability".
Protruding a mere 18mm from the front of the camera, this remarkable standard lens enables you to slip the camera into coat pockets, handbags and light luggage. Moreover, those who like to get a little extra into the picture will find that the 40mm standard lens gives them 10° more angle of view than 50mm standard lens; yet it still offers a perspective that is pleasing for portraits and snapshots. In addition, the "pancake" lens is a particularly great lens for hikes, trips and so forth.
Manufacturer description #3
This is the incredible "pancake" lens that everyone has been talking about. Weighing a mere 110 grams (3.88 ozs) and extending a mere 18mm (0.7 in.) from the camera body, it enables you to convert your already compact Pentax into a "pocket" SLR, slipping easily into handbags, coat pockets and light luggage. Moreover, its shorter 40mm focal length gives a perspective which is still natural enough for beautiful portraits and snapshots, while the extra 10° angle of view lets you get more into the picture. And, using today's fast films, it's also fast enough for indoor snapshots without flash. A great lens for hikes, travelling and everyday use.
Manufacturer description #4
The Smallest 40mm Lens in 35mm SLR Photography. This dramatic example of miniaturization sets a new trend and level of excellence in standard lenses. Ultra-compact, it protrudes less than 3/4 inch from the mounting plane and weighs only 3 3/4 ounces. It covers a 56 degree angle of view, 10 degrees more than a 50mm lens, and focuses to 2 feet. Lens construction is 5 elements in 4 groups.
