Manufacturer description #1
This lens lies between the SMC Pentax 15mm f/3.5 and 20mm f/4 ultra-wide-angle lenses in order of focal length. Compared to the 20mm f/4 ultra-wide, the 18mm f/3.5 offers additional lens speed (f/3.5 vs f/4), greater coverage (100 degrees vs 94), and four built-in filters. In addition to the built-in filters, the 18mm f/3.5 has provision to accept gelatin filters at the rear of the lens, which is not feasible on the 15mm f/3.5 because of its protruding rear element.
Manufacturer description #2
This SMC Pentax 18mm f/3.5 rectilinear lens has an angle of view of 100°, lying midway between the 15mm f/3 .5 and the 20mm f/4 lenses. There are four built-in filters, cloudy, skylight, Y2, O2, and a provision for gelatin filters at the rear of the lens. (It is significant that this is the first 18mm ultra wide-angle lens of any manufacturer to incorporate built-in filters.) Its lens hood is the same as 20mm f/4 and 24mm f/3.5 SMCP lenses.
Manufacturer description #3
With a focal length approximately midway between the 15mm f/3.5 and 20mm f/4 lens, the 18mm wide-angle lens offers greater speed than the 20mm lens (f/3.5 vs f/4) and a sweeping 100° angle of coverage - 6° wider than that of the 20mm lens. It has also been well corrected to eliminate distortion. Four built-in filters are featured along with a clip-type holder for gelatin filters at the rear (which is not feasible with the 15mm lens because of its protruding element).
Pentax series
The first generation of lenses designed for Asahi Pentax 35mm SLR cameras with bayonet mount. Introduced with Asahi Pentax K2, KX and KM in 1975.
- Robust, all-metal design with recessed focusing distance scale;
- Fully automatic diaphragm;
- Support for TTL open-aperture metering;
- Extremely accurate manual focusing with rubberized focusing ring;
- Multi-layer anti-reflection coating.
(except for 400mm+ super telephotos and bellows lenses).
