Manufacturer description #1

The fisheye lens is an invaluable tool for the creative photographer. Characteristics enjoyed by professional photographers include its exaggerated perspective, incredible depth-of-field and ability to bend straight lines. SMC Pentax Fish-Eye 17mm f/4 has an enormous 180° angle of view which enables it to engulf the tallest building or most expansive landscape. Its compact size and four built-in filters are so attractive features, as well as its provision to accept gelatin filters at the rear.

Manufacturer description #2

The world's most efficient fish-eye lens with a maximum brightness of f/4. The angle of vision is approx. 180 degrees, enabling you to view and focus through the viewfinder without keeping the reflex mirror flipped up.

Manufacturer description #3

Attractive features of the SMC Pentax 17mm f/4 Fish-Eye include its extremely compact size and close focusing ability of 20cm. Moreover, it has four built-in filters (UV, Skylight, Y2, 02) which can instantly be dialed into place. Gelatine filters can also be slipped into the built-on gelatine filter holder at the rear of the lens.

Pentax series

The first generation of lenses designed for Asahi Pentax 35mm SLR cameras with bayonet mount. Introduced with Asahi Pentax K2, KX and KM in 1975.

  • Robust, all-metal design with recessed focusing distance scale;
  • Fully automatic diaphragm;
  • Support for TTL open-aperture metering;
  • Extremely accurate manual focusing with rubberized focusing ring;
  • Multi-layer anti-reflection coating.

(except for 400mm+ super telephotos and bellows lenses).

Typical characteristics of fisheye lenses

  • Extreme angle of view (at least 180° diagonally);
  • Circular types (the image circle of the lens is inscribed in the image frame) or diagonal types (cover the entire image frame);
  • Usually of equidistant projection type, with the distance from the picture center to any given point always proportional to the angle from the optical axis to that point;
  • Huge barrel distortion;
  • Short closest focusing distance (0.20 - 0.30m with 35mm full-frame prime lenses);
  • Very large depth of field, eliminating the need for autofocus or precise manual focusing;
  • Due to the extreme angle of view and convex front element, front filters cannot be used;
  • Often equipped with a filter turret with swivel-mounted filters;
  • Often come with a small, built-in petal-shaped lens hood.
