Sigma's APO 800mm F5.6 EX is one of three new ultra telephoto lenses. It is an Apochromatic ultra-telephoto lens with a fast F5.6 maximum aperture, and incorporates two Extraordinary Low Dispersion glass elements (Abbe number 90.3), to reduce chromatic aberration to minimum limit. It also incorporates internal focusing which enables responsive and fast auto focus speed. The AF drive for Sigma SA, Canon and Nikon S.L.R. cameras features the ultra-quiet Hyper Sonic Motor (H.S.M.). This new lens also incorporates a rotary filter holder in the rear part of the lens barrel, which enables the use of a polarizing filter. Sigma's dedicated APO EX Tele Converter 1.4x MF and 2x MF can be used with this lens. The lens materials used in this new lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.

This large-aperture 800 mm lens brings distant subjects into the foreground. The HSM allows silent, high-speed AF photography. Manual focusing is also possible. This lens uses the newly developed ELD glass in the front lens group. The internal focus system does not change the length of the lens, and this allows the photographer to hold the camera with ease. A filter can be inserted near the rear, and circular polarizing filters can be used. When this lens is used with the 1.4x or 2x APO TELE converter (optional), it becomes a 1,120 mm f/8 MF lens and a 1,600 mm f/11 MF lens respectively.

Notes

  • Sigma had to reverse engineer the communication protocol of the Canon EF mount to produce a version of this lens for Canon EOS 35mm film SLR cameras. As a consequence, this lens may not work properly with Canon EOS cameras (both film and digital) due to compatibility issues.
