From the editor
In its brochure, Sears states that the lens consists of 11 elements in 8 groups, but judging by the image of the optical formula, it looks more like 11 elements in 7 groups.
If you compare the optical formulas, it becomes clear that the Auto Sears 90-230/4.5 is definitely related to the following lenses:
- Soligor 90-230/4.5 Auto (made by Tokina) - has an interchangeable mount and a closest focusing distance of 2.5m;
- Vivitar 90-230/4.5 Auto (made by Tokina) - has an interchangeable mount and a closest focusing distance of 2.5m;
- Auto Mamiya/Sekor ES 90-230/4.5 - has a bayonet mount and a closest focusing distance of 2.5m;
- Auto Mamiya/Sekor SX 90-230/4.5 [I] - has two separate elements in the optical formula where Sears has a doublet.
It is quite possible that both the Auto Sears and Auto Mamiya/Sekor versions were also produced by Tokina. It is very likely that Tokina, being an original design manufacturer (ODM), deliberately slightly varied the specification of the base model when producing it for different distributors. (Or it is simply a matter of improving the specification of the base model over time)
