Manufacturer description

Long-focus mirror lens of supremely compact design - it is just 78x88mm large and weighs 500g (17 1/2 oz). The lens takes neutral density filters to offer the equivalent of alternative stops. Suitable - with a fast enough shutter speed - even for handheld shots. Covers very great distances. The exceptional near focusing range down to 1.5m (5 ft) also permits large-scale closeups.

Typical characteristics of mirror (reflex) lenses

  • Catadioptric system consisting of curved mirrors and optical glass;
  • Much shorter, lighter and less expensive designs than conventional super telephoto lenses;
  • Outstanding correction of chromatic aberrations;
  • Since the aperture is fixed, neutral density filters are used to obtain a smaller aperture;
  • Doughnut-shaped out-of-focus highlights.

From the editor

The lens was produced under the following names:

  • Reflex-Rolleinar MC 1:8 f=500mm - made by Tokina
  • VOIGTLÄNDER REFLEX-DYNAR 8/500 AR - made by Tokina

The reason for the release of this lens in different names was that Rolleiflex SL35 series cameras were sold under the name Voigtlander in a number of markets.

Optically the lens is the same as the RMC Tokina 500mm 1:8.

The lens was supplied with NDx2, NDx4, Skylight filters and a leather case. Some manufacturer's documents say that the rear filter size is 33.5mm, other say 35.5mm.

The manufacturer description states that the maximum length is 88mm however larger length (95mm) is indicated in almost all manufacturer's documents, except for the Rolleiflex SL 2000 F 35mm SLR camera system booklet (August 1982).
