Manufacturer description

This lens combines the advantage of the perspectively interesting focal length of 90 mm with the infinitely achievable macro setting 1:1! On the one hand, it is an ideal portrait telephoto lens and, on the other hand, it is so excellently corrected in the macro range that even when taking pictures with an open aperture of 2.8, significantly better overall sharpness is achieved than, for example, with a normal lens with the appropriate accessories and aperture 5.6 or 8. Although it has only been on the market for a short time, the PANAGOR 90 mm f/2.8 has already won many friends.

The 90mm is perfect for portraits, but by stopping down to apertures around f/8, it brings in brilliantly biting detail. And you can wind-out the lens to give completely life-size shots - for instance, a picture of a postage stamp 1 inch x 1 1/2 inches, five inches from the front of the lens.

With its aperture of f/2.8, you can certainly use a 2x converter with it for more distant shots which demand a 180mm lens. The definition is certainly good enough to tolerate a converter without a noticeable drop in quality.

The Panagor lenses are good value for money, if a trifle on the heavy side. And that 90mm certainly deserves a place in your camera bag!

Notes

  • Independent-brand lenses were made for 35mm film SLR cameras by companies that competed with the camera manufacturers. Some came from factories that made lenses under their own brand names (Angenieux, Kiron, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina). Many others were national and international marketing organizations (Kalimar, Panagor, Rokunar, Soligor, Starblitz) that bought lenses from anonymous manufacturers. One firm — Vivitar — actually designed its own lenses and accessories, which were then subcontracted to manufacturing firms. Still others were private labels, sold only by specific photo specialty shops (Cambron, Quantaray, Spiratone).
