Manufacturer description #1
TOKYO - Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the release of the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2, a compact and lightweight prime lens compatible with full-frame (Nikon FX-format) mirrorless cameras for which the Nikon Z mount has been adopted.
The NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is a compact and lightweight, standard prime lens with a fast f/2 maximum aperture that allows users to easily enjoy bokeh as part of their imaging expression. It achieves a compact and lightweight body with a total length of approximately 45.5 mm and weight of approximately 170 g, while providing a versatile 40 mm standard angle of view that can be utilized for a wide range of scenes. Furthermore, its fast aperture and 9-blade iris diaphragm realize beautiful round-shaped bokeh, transforming users' everyday moments and portraits into more impactful scenes.
As well as this, the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 delivers outstanding AF performance and dust- and drip-resistance*, while balancing high cost-performance, and is ideal for a broad range of Z series users, including those new to mirrorless cameras as well as professional photographers.
Nikon will continue to pursue a new dimension in optical performance while meeting users' needs, contributing to the development of imaging culture, with the hope of expanding possibilities for imaging expression.
Primary features of the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2:
- The bright maximum aperture of f/2 and a 9-blade iris diaphragm provide beautiful round-shaped bokeh.
- The 40 mm focal length supports a standard angle of view ideal for shooting portraits, snapshots and other subjects in a wide variety of scenes.
- The focal length becomes 60 mm (equivalent to 35mm [135] format) when mounted on a DX-format camera.
- A compact and lightweight body with a total length of approximately 45.5 mm and weight of approximately 170 g.
- Minimum focus distance of 0.29 m allows users to get close to their subjects.
- Adoption of an STM (stepping motor) enables quiet, fast and accurate AF control while maintaining a compact body size.
- Designed with consideration of dust- and drip-resistant performance so that it can be taken anywhere with greater confidence.
- Functions such as aperture and exposure compensation can be assigned to the control ring.
- Developed with consideration for video recording, offering extremely quiet operation, effective focus-breathing compensation, and stable exposure.
Manufacturer description #2
The NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is an ultra-compact prime you can rely on with any Z camera in just about any situation. Its wide enough for street work, landscapes and interiors but tight enough for authentic portraits and candid shots. It has a fast f/2 maximum aperture that powers through low lighting, helps freeze fast action and separates your subject from the background with a beautiful bokeh effect. And it does all of this with clarity, consistency and brightness that's all Z.
Sitting between two prized focal lengths, 35mm and 50mm, the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 takes strong points from each. It captures natural-looking portraits and close-ups like a 50mm, but it's also wide enough for shooting indoors, on the street or in a crowd like a 35mm. On a DX-format Z camera, it has a field of view of 60mm*, another all-purpose focal length for everything from portraits to street photography.
The NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is so compact and lightweight—just 1.8 inches long and weighing 6 oz—you'll forget it's even there. It doesn't extend or retract, so it's always ready. Take it wherever you go as your main walk-around lens or as a lightweight second lens.
Make your subject stand out against a beautifully blurred background. The shallow depth of field of f/2 is enhanced by the lens' 9 rounded blade diaphragm, creating a natural bokeh effect.
The NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 rewards you for getting in close to your subject. The lens' beautiful bokeh is accentuated at closer distances, giving your subject almost three-dimensional separation.
The larger Z mount draws even more light gathering performance from the wide f/2 aperture. Capture the mood of dimly lit situations with clarity and sharpness, and use faster shutter speeds to freeze action without sacrificing brightness.
The NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2's quiet autofocus system greatly suppresses focus breathing to prevent angle-of-view shifts during recording. Make smooth iris adjustments with the click-less control ring to create a natural shift in brightness.
When it comes to autofocus, the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is the strong, silent type. A new high-torque stepping motor operates at blazing fast speeds in near silence, whether using Eye-Detection AF or continuous subject tracking.
The smooth click-less control ring can be customized for the way you shoot. Use it for precise manual focusing or to adjust aperture, ISO or exposure compensation.
The lens barrel and all moving parts are designed carefully considering dust- and drip-resistant performance with sealing that prevents dust and water droplets from entering the lens.
From the editor
Another "nifty forty" for 35mm full frame mirrorless cameras, many of them have been released recently. It has an ascetic compact and lightweight barrel which is even weather sealed. The reduction in weight and dimensions was made possible by the use of a plastic mount and a simple optical formula with a small number of elements. The efficient autofocus motor allows this lens to be succesfully used for both photography and videography. As with the Z 28/2.8, which is in the same class of budget all-plastic lenses designed for hobbyists, the lens hood is not available.
Although the Z 40/2 is formally a wide-angle lens (since its focal length is less than diagonal of a full-frame sensor, which is 43.27mm), it does not provide a wide enough field of view to comfortably shoot wide-angle scenes (architecture, interiors, expansive landscapes), especially if it is not possible to increase the focusing distance. On the other hand, the focal length is too short to shoot portraits with impressive background blur. The situation doesn't get any better when using this lens on an APS-C camera. An equivalent focal length of 60mm provides too narrow field of view for this lens to be used as a standard lens, and the background blur will not be so impressive as with lenses specially designed for portrait photography.
With this in mind, the typical use cases for this lens are likely to be casual photography and vlogging. It is rather difficult to imagine shooting any other subjects with this lens (however, it does not mean that it is impossible).
