Manufacturer description

TOKYO - Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the release of the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4, a wide-angle prime lens that is compatible with full-frame/FX-format mirrorless cameras for which the Nikon Z mount has been adopted.

The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 is a wide-angle prime lens with a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, yet available at an affordable price. Not only does it allow users to easily enjoy the soft expressions offered by large bokeh and three-dimensional rendering that make the subject stand out, but its wide-angle 35-mm focal length also enables the capture of a wide variety of scenes and subjects, from landscapes and snapshots to portraits and photos of flowers and pets. The minimum focus distance of 0.27 m allows users to get close to subjects such as food and flowers, and to create works that emphasize the main subject with large background bokeh. Despite its f/1.4 maximum aperture, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 has a total length of approximately 86.5 mm and weighs around 415 g. This design achieves a similar size to the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S, making it easy to use on a daily basis and to take with you for quick snapshots whenever you go out. In addition, the superior optical performance unique to NIKKOR Z lenses allows for clear depiction with minimal chromatic aberrations. Shooting close-up portraits at maximum aperture results in soft rendering around the face and clear rendering of the eyelashes. What's more, stopping down the aperture when photographing landscapes realizes sharp rendering, allowing the photographer to tailor imaging expression to suit their intent. As a wide-angle prime lens with superior cost-performance, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 supports the capture of a wide variety of scenes and subjects, providing strong support for those looking to expand their own range of imaging expression in photography.

Nikon will continue to pursue a new dimension in optical performance while meeting users' needs, contributing to the development of imaging culture, with the hope of expanding possibilities for imaging expression.

Primary features

  • The lens offers excellent cost-performance with the fast, f/1.4 maximum aperture, allowing users to enjoy three-dimensional expressions with large bokeh that make the subject stand out.
  • With a total length of approximately 86.5 mm and a weight of around 415 g, the lens is easy to carry and supports comfortable hand-held shooting.
  • The wide-angle 35-mm angle of view enables the easy capture of a wide range of scenes and subjects, from landscapes and snapshots to people, flowers, and pets.
  • A minimum focus distance of 0.27 m allows users to get close to their subject and achieve large background bokeh for impressive shots.
  • The superior optical performance of NIKKOR Z lenses delivers clear depiction with minimal chromatic aberrations.
  • Adoption of a stepping motor (STM) ensures fast and quiet autofocusing.
  • Designed to suppress focus breathing, which is ideal for recording video.
  • Designed for dust- and drip-resistance with sealing throughout.

From the editor

The main difference between the 35/1.4 and 35/1.8 S is that low dispersion elements are not used in the optical formula of the faster lens. As you may know, low dispersion elements are responsible for correcting chromatic aberrations, as well as improving contrast and resolution, especially at maximum aperture. And indeed, if you look at the MTF graph for F/1.4, the contrast drops at the edges of the frame BY A THIRD compared to the center. Plus, since the lens is faster than the 35/1.8, vignetting at maximum aperture should also be stronger. All this noticeably degrades the image quality at the edges of the frame, which may be why Nikon did not dare to assign the S label to this model.
