Manufacturer description
Compact lens with Nikon’s Rear Focus system for fast, smooth autofocusing. Exceptionally large aperture makes it perfect for low-light photography - indoors or out. Precision ground-glass aspherical lens elements minimize distortion and coma. Filter size is 72mm
From the editor
Exceptionally fast wide-angle lens, the fastest 28mm prime lens available in the market at the time of introduction. It was designed mainly for available and low-light shooting, where F/2.8 wide-angle lenses may impose restrictions on the shutter speed. However, you can use this lens in any lighting conditions.
Note: The development of large-diameter wide-angle lens with maximum aperture F/1.4 was expected to involve difficulties because of the aberration called sagittal coma. This aberration manifests itself more significantly with large-diameter lenses and wide-angle lenses. It was known that the effective correction of sagittal coma requires the use of ASPH elements. Only after the successful introduction of manufacturing method for polished ASPH element for the Nikon AI Noct-Nikkor 58mm F/1.2 lens (1977), Nikon designers were able to start the development of the AF 28mm F/1.4D lens, a "Noct-Nikkor" among company’s other wide-angle lenses. For more information on the Nikon AI Noct-Nikkor 58mm F/1.2 lens, please refer to the article dedicated to the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 58mm F/1.4G lens.
Notes
- The autofocus will not be available with Nikon D40, D40X, D60, D3000-D3500, D5000-D5600 digital SLR cameras.
