Manufacturer description #3
This innovative lens has become a favorite among portrait photographers due to its excellent image quality, pleasing 105mm angle-of-view, fast f/2 maxium aperture and exclusive Defocus Image Control feature, which lets you selectively soften the focus in background or foreground elements. Expand your creativity with this remarkable prime lens.
Nikon’s exclusive Defocus Image Control (DC) feature allows you to control the degree of soft focus in the foreground or background of a composition. Use this creative control to make your subjects stand out from their background to softly blur elements in the foreground.
With a medium-telephoto 105mm angle-of-view and a fast f/2 maximum aperture, the AF DC-NIKKOR 105mm f/2 is an ideal portrait lens. Its fast maximum aperture delivers beautiful natural background blur (bokeh) and enables dramatic low-light shooting. And because it’s a NIKKOR, you can expect consistently stunning images in nearly any setting.
From the editor
The lens was designed, first and foremost, to produce aesthetically pleasing images, and provides a good compromise of medium focal length and wide aperture to give the natural perspective and shallow depth of field favored by many portrait photographers. It features a Defocus Image Control which enables you to defocus the background or foreground, and a round diaphragm opening to make out-of-focus highlights appear more natural.
The lens is equipped with special Defocus Image Control ring which features a corresponding scale marked as follows: F - 5.6 - 4 - 2.8 - 2 - | - 2 - 2.8 - 4 - 5.6 - R. To blur the background, rotate the DC ring toward the "R" mark on a scale, while pushing the DC ring lock release button. To blur the foreground, rotate the DC ring toward the "F" mark. For effective background or foreground blur, it is recommended to set the same F/number on the DC scale as the aperture in use. Turning the DC ring beyond the aperture in use creates a soft-focus effect. The DC ring can be also left at the neutral (zero) position. Image blur cannot be verified through the viewfinder. Defocus Image Control should be performed BEFORE focusing. If you rotate DC ring after focusing, the proper focus will be lost.
In order to use the lens hood, pull it out and turn counterclockwise for two rotations. To store, turn the hood clockwise and push back. In case when a filter is installed on the lens, it is still possible to use the lens hood. However, due to the fact that the front element is deeply recessed inside the lens barrel, in most cases the lens hood can be left in its stored position without any deterioration of the image quality.
Optically the 135mm DC-Nikkor is very good but no match for the outstanding performance of this 105mm.
The AF system provides quick positive AF response and although it takes a little experimentation once mastered the DC control feature is a very creative tool.
Notes
- The autofocus will not be available with Nikon D40, D40X, D60, D3000-D3500, D5000-D5600 digital SLR cameras.
