Manufacturer description #1
The "МТО-1000А" (10,5/1000) is a mirror-reflex telephoto lens. The lens elements are chemically coated.
Designed for small-format cameras with a frame size of 2,4x3,6 cm. Produced for SLR cameras of the "Зенит" type. It differs from the МТО-1000 lens in that it has interchangeable adapters М39х1 and М42х1, which expand the possibilities of its use.
The very long focal length and good image quality make the lens suitable for outdoor shooting of distant objects, terrain, architectural details, for photo hunting, etc. The lens is indispensable in cases where the subject is at a very large distance (up to several kilometres) from the photographer, and when photographing it is required to obtain a large-scale image.
Manufacturer description #2
The МТО-1000А lens in a special barrel is designed as an interchangeable lens for the "Зенит" camera with a curtain shutter.
The lens is available in two versions: with an adapter having a М39x1 mm thread, and with an adapter having a М42x1 mm thread.
The mirror lens is mainly used for shooting distant objects, inaccessible areas of terrain, landscapes, architectural details, animals and birds that are difficult to approach at close range.
The МТО-1000А is also indispensable in photo hunting.

Technical data
Focal length, mm: 1084±1,5%.
Relative aperture: 1:10,5.
Angle of view: 2°30'.
Working distance: 45,5 mm; 45,2 mm.
Light transmission: no less than 0,60.
Resolving power (center/edges), lines/mm: 28/18.
Focusing limits: from 10 m to INF.
Filter thread: М120х1.
Camera thread: М42х1; М39х1.
Due to the heavy weight, the lens works with a special tripod. There are two sockets for attaching a tripod to the lens barrel: with a 3/8" and 1/4" thread.
Typical characteristics of mirror (reflex) lenses
- Catadioptric system consisting of curved mirrors and optical glass;
- Much shorter, lighter and less expensive designs than conventional super telephoto lenses;
- Outstanding correction of chromatic aberrations;
- Since the aperture is fixed, neutral density filters are used to obtain a smaller aperture;
- Doughnut-shaped out-of-focus highlights.
From the editor
The lens was produced both by the Lytkarino Optical Glass Plant (USSR) and the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant (USSR).
The lens was supplied with three 120mm screw-in filters: ЖС-10 (aka УФ-1х, UV), ЖЗС-9 (aka ЖЗ-2х, Yellow/Green) and ОС-12 (aka О-2,8х, Orange).
Notes
- "МТО" is an abbreviation for "Максутова ТелеОбъектив", which means "Maksutov's Telephoto lens", or "Менисковый ТелеОбъектив", which means "Meniscus Telephoto lens".
- Dmitry Dmitrievich Maksutov (1896-1964) is a Soviet scientist, optician, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1946). Inventor of the meniscus optical system bearing his name, which is now widely used in telescope construction.
- The lens has an interchangeable mount that is mechanically identical to the T2 interchangeable mount. In the USSR, the following interchangeable mount adapters were produced: "КП-А/42" (T2 - M42x1/45.5), "КП-А/39" (T2 - M39x1/45.2), "КП-А/К" (T2 - Pentax K), "КП-А/Н" (T2 - Nikon F). "КП" is an abbreviation for "Кольцо переходное", which means "Adapter ring".
