Manufacturer description
Your Maxxum AF Reflex 500mm F/8 is a compact, autofocusing, reflex-type telephoto lens designed for use with the Maxxum 5000i/7000i/8000i camera; in manual mode, it may be used with other Minolta Maxxum AF SLRs as well.
The filter holder at the rear of the lens contains a clear filter marked "NORMAL"; another holder, containing a filter marked "ND4X", is supplied as well. If you're shooting a bright scene, the ND4X filter can be used to reduce the amount of light reaching the film by 2 stops. To obtain optimum results, one of these filters should be used at all times, since the filter is an integral part of the lens' optical design.
Typical characteristics of mirror (reflex) lenses
- Catadioptric system consisting of curved mirrors and optical glass;
- Much shorter, lighter and less expensive designs than conventional super telephoto lenses;
- Outstanding correction of chromatic aberrations;
- Since the aperture is fixed, neutral density filters are used to obtain a smaller aperture;
- Doughnut-shaped out-of-focus highlights.
