With a 35mm equivalent focal length of 38-40mm (depending on sensor size), this moderate wide-angle lens is a mere 3-6mm short of being considered a standard lens. The lens covers a wide range of subjects from landscapes and architecture to portraits. Although it does not have a record-breaking speed, it is enough to shoot in low light conditions, as well as isolate the subject, smoothly blurring the background, especially at short focusing distances. When stopping down, 9 aperture blades will keep the out-of-focus highlight's a more rounded shape.
With a knurled focusing ring and recessed focusing distance scale, the lens is somewhat reminiscent of Asahi's iconic Super-Multi-Coated Takumar series lenses. Like many other Meike lenses, the 25/1.8 is optimized for close-up shooting, as evidenced by the focusing distance scale, most of which is taken up by markings from the closest focusing distance (CFD) of 0.25m to 1m. The short CFD allows for close-ups of flowers and other small subjects.
The light weight (190g) and overall length of 40.9mm make this lens very portable and convenient for casual or travel photography, if you don't mind focusing manually.
The lens accepts small 49mm screw-in filters, while a lens hood is not available (but you can try a generic round screw-in lens hood designed for a full-frame 50mm lens).
The Nikon Z-mount version was announced in August 2020.
