Manufacturer description #1

The 50mm f/4 Shift is a special application lens for perspective control. It features a unique wide field coverage and perspective control shift mechanism in rotating mount, allowing the photographer to maintain proper linear perspective, identical to PC shift lenses for 35mm cameras. Applications include precise perspective for architectural or industrial rendering or table top photography.

Manufacturer description #2

When the Shift Control Knob is rotated, the lens itself moves parallel to the film plane. Additionally, the lens can be rotated 360 degrees, and has click-stops at 30-degree intervals (the lens can also be used between click-stops).

Since the negative area of the M645 is a rectangle (41.5x56mm), the extent to which the lens can be shifted will change each time the lens is rotated. When the Central Index Mark of the lens (located beneath the Shift Limit Window) is uppermost or lowermost, the lens will move horizontally, with a maximum shift of 13mm. The maximum shift possible at each 30-degree click-stop is indicated by a color-coded numeral appearing in the Shift Limit Window. This numeral indicates the maximum shift in millimeters, and its color matches that of its position on the Shift Scale. To avoid vignetting, the appropriate color on the Shift Scale shoul not be moved beyond the Shift Index.

When the lens is rotated 90 degrees, it can be shifted upward or downward (vertically), with a maximum shift of 16mm. When the lens is rotated for a diagonal shift, it can be shifted up to the limit indicated in the Shift Limit Window.
