From "Leica Illustrated History", Vol. II (1994) by James L. Lager, p. 57-58

American photojournalists demanded a synchro speed for flash faster than the 1/50 second which the Leica focal plane shutter could offer at the time. Leitz designer Erwin Neurath incorporated a between-the-lens central shutter into the fitting of a Summicron 50mm lens. This shutter permitted electronic flash synchronisation at 1/100 and 1/200 sec.

A special release arm mounted to the camera first closed the central shutter, then opened the focal plane shutter of the Leica IIIf (set to “B“) and then released the exposure with the central shutter.

Of this unusual assembly, only three small series of 50 lenses each were produced. Only 58 of the 150 lenses were ever officially sold, while the remaining 92 units remained in the factory and were sold to Leitz employees almost 20 years later.

From the Classic Camera magazine (February 1997)

Around 1956 according to Laney (but actually much earlier), 58 screw mount, non-retractable Summicron 50mm lenses were built with Compur shutters, obviously in an attempt to market them through the normal channels.

When the lever was kept in its rest position, the Compur shutter remained open and the Summicron could be used normally in connection with the Leica focal plane shutter. Information at my disposal suggests that the total number of Compur Summicrons built is 150: 58 "official" and 92 distributed as usual to Leitz employees and "test driver" photographers. Be they 58 or 150, however, numbers are of little importance, as a Compur Summicron, especially if equipped with its lever, is one of the most desirable Leica collectables, thanks to that particular allure that very few objects emanate. Also, with its extremely delicate rare earth (lanthanum, etc.) lenses - which were also used in the normal Summicrons - it can still offer extremely high quality pictures, with an exceptional colour rendition that can be fully appreciated only using slide film.

Notes

  • All LEICA lenses having a focusing lever are automatically locked at the infinity position. This feature enables the camera to be used for infinity scenes and subjects without danger of the lens becoming accidentally out of focus due to unintentional movement. To release the lever for focusing on nearer planes press the knob at the end of the lever.
