Manufacturer description #1
December 12, 2013 - A mutual passion for photography and the art of image capture between two companies’ owner has led two special firms, Shanghai Transvision and German IB/E Optics, to collaborate on an industry-shaking new innovation. By merging Geman high-quality engineering standards with Chinese cost-effective production infrastructure, the new camera lens brand Handevision (“Han” means China in Mandarin and “De” is the word for Germany).
After many months of collaboration between engineering and production teams, final quality control assessments have concluded and the IBELUX 40mm f0.85 high-speed lens, the fastest lens in the world, is nearly ready for release. Available for sale by February, 2014, this lens will be available for Sony NEX, Fuji X, Canon EOS M and Micro 4/3 digital mirrorless camera mounts (MSRP is $2,080 USD).
While risky to start our launch with this ground-breaking high-speed lens, we hope to gain the attention and confidence of photographers around the world with our expanding new lenses. Our mission is to manufacture high-grade lenses of metallic construction with a clean, aesthetic finish. As a new player in the lens market, we believe we can expand our new brand internationally as our engineers, uninhibited by production costs nor by material restrictions, will be free to work creatively in seeking optimal image quality and artistic design.
We are currently working on our next project, the wide-angle IBEGON lens. With Sony releasing the new full-frame mirrorless A7/A7R camera, we have designed a high-speed telephoto APO mirror lens called the IBECAT, named for its sharp image capture, its lightweight construction and fast glass. Additional lenses are in development for full frame mirrorless cameras, including a tilt-shift lens and a compact fixed focal length lens.
LENS-DB: Both the IBEGON and IBECAT lenses were never released.
We are focusing our efforts at expanding our line of full-frame mirrorless and DSLR detachable lenses in 2014 and are constantly developing ways to satisfy demand of professional photographers for faster, sharper lenses.
COMPANY HISTORY:
Shanghai Transvision Photographic Equipment co. Ltd.
Founded in 2007, Shanghai Transvision is well-known for its Kipon brand, a major international player in the body mount adapters for camera, video, telescope, microscope and industrial camera markets. Kipon boasts the most extensive lineup in this field worldwide.
IB/E OPTICS GmbH
Founded in 2001, IB/E Optics is a leader in optics design, supplying optic design for many leading enterprises in different fields. Except for the Handevision consumer camera lens project, mainly active in cine, broadcast, medical, industrial optics, and automotive research.
First lot lens would be on sale from Feb 25th 2014 in Europe, North America, Japan, and Russia.
Manufacturer description #2
The high-speed IBELUX 1:0.85/40mm lens is the first lens of HandeVision brand and incidentally the fastest lens for mirrorless cameras in the world. The photographer thus has a lens in hands that was never built in series. While there are some special lenses in the area of cine or for night vision photography, they are not 0.85 and they are not in serial production. IBELUX 1:0.85/40mm was created for available light shots with special bokeh and charm. During optimization, special attention has been paid to the focusing distance of 2.5m, as most shots in available light are taken indoors. Here it is important to obtain the maximum optical performance; at the image magnification of 1:0.016. This corresponds to an object field of 1.6 m x 1.1 m (APS-C 25.1 x 16.7mm).
The very small depth of focus or depth of field at full aperture allows you to isolate subjects even with relatively small APS-C sensors. This delivers with APS-C a look that you would obtain from your F No 1.2 lens with full frame sensors. To keep the size of the lens in popular dimensions (74 mm in dia) vignetting at full aperture has to be accepted. When shooting in low lighting conditions the decrease in brightness at the edges is not annoying or even noticeable.
A kind of special look of this optical design is the concave surface of the front lens element. This is fundamentally different from other light giants, such as the famous Leica Noctilux, which is based on a double Gauss optical design. With 10 elements in 8 groups heavier weight had to be accepted to avoid aspherical surfaces for cost reasons. The IBELUX was designed according to requirements of modern digital camera sensors. That means that marginal rays angle shall be kept small. Ideally, the principal angle of the main beam should be less than 5° in respect to the optical axis. This can avoid aberrations microlens arrays cause on digital sensors such as lateral chromatic aberration and other artifacts. The IBELUX main beam has an incidence angle of only 2.6°. Note that such telecentric lens designs are much more difficult to design than systems of the former analog days, where the optical designer did not have to care about influences of this angle. To do so, the design requires high power in the rear optical group, so more elements are needed.
The lateral chromatic aberration of the optical system is on average smaller than 6 nm, which corresponds approximately to a 4K resolution in this size. A fantastic value for a F0.85 APS-C lens. Also see the IBELUX 1:0.85/40mm has tremendous MTF values at 1st best stop, F No 5.6.
Contrary to more and more plastic options, the IBELUX 1:0.85/40mm returns to traditional values and a long-lasting metal construction. Anodized aluminum, brass for the focus mechanism and stainless steel are used.
The straight guided focus group in the rear portion of the lens can be accurately positioned with a rotation angle of about 250°. A turn of 0.1° on the focusing ring results in a focus move in the image plane of 2 nm or a shift in focus at the object of 8 nm (all at 2.5m). So be careful in finding the best focus point at full aperture.
A mechanically adjustable, linear stepped aperture with full clicks from 0.85 to 22 allows a quick selection of depth of field. The diaphragm has 10 blades that produce a circular opening and therefore an unique bokeh. The integrated sun shade has the advantage that it is always immediately available when needed and can be extended with only one hand while taking pictures.
All this makes the IBELUX a lens for serious photographers who focuses manually rather than leaving it to autofocus.
The high speed IBELUX 1:0.85/40mm lens will also allow photographers to avoid using flash maintaining the natural atmosphere in available lighting.
