Manufacturer description

The FED-35 wide-angle lens is a double asymmetrical Gauss-type anastigmat with a relative aperture of 1:4.5, focal length of 28mm and an image angle of 76°.

The wide-angle lens is designed for shooting in all cases when, due to the conditions of the place, the photographer does not have the opportunity to move far enough to get the entire object in the frame. This happens, for example, when shooting high or wide structures, shooting indoors, etc.

When shooting with a wide-angle lens, it is necessary to pay attention to the strict horizontality of the lens axis in order to avoid tilting the frame, and to use a special viewfinder.

The wide-angle lens is equipped with an iris diaphragm and has three scales: an aperture scale, a distance scale, and a depth of field scale.

From the editor

A very compact wide-angle lens for FED 35mm rangefinder cameras that protrudes only 1.2cm when mounted on the camera. It was produced before the Great Patriotic War by the Kharkov NKVD plant named after Dzerzhinsky. It is unlikely that a large number of units were released. The lens was supposed to be used together with an universal folding frame viewfinder, but even fewer viewfinders were produced than lenses.

Optically, the FED 28/4.5 is a more advanced design than the Leitz Hektor 28/6.3 or the uncoupled Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 28/8, demonstrating the power of Soviet optical science at the time. However, like all lenses from the late 1930s and early 1940s, the FED 28/4.5, of course, lacks an anti-reflective coating, so overall image contrast is low, and resistance to flares is poor. The lens also exhibits strong vignetting.

The dial-set aperture ring moves smoothly, without click stops.

NOTE: The flange focal distance of this lens was not standardized, requiring individual adjustment of the lens to the camera.
