Manufacturer description
The Celestron 300mm f/5.6 catadioptric telephoto offers the photographer a high quality, super-compact, super-usable telephoto for candid, nature, sports, action photography. The 300mm f/5.6 Celestron telephoto employs the most modern optical fabrication and testing methods in its manufacture along with modern optical design to offer a very high quality lens at a very low cost.
To use, simply thread the appropriate camera T-ring on the 300mm lens, attach to your camera body and begin to use this compact telephoto as you would any other lens.
This instrument is the only telephoto lens offered by Celestron of other manufacture. The unit is imported to exacting specifications for us.
Included in the base price are lens caps, carrying case, and ND2 filter (34mm).
ACCESSORIES FOR THE 300mm f/5.6 TELEPHOTO
To enhance your use of the Celestron 300mm Telephoto we offer a lens shade and filters.
- Lens Shade - 300mm. The lens shade will help increase photographic contrast; it will also aid photography when your subject requires you to aim toward the sun.
- 300mm filter set (34mm). This set includes 4 filters: Skylight #1A, Red #25A, Yellow #8, and ND4. These filters thread onto the back of the lens before you attach your camera.
- Full aperture 67mm filters. These filters thread over the front aperture of the 300mm lens. Filters available separately are: Polarizing Filters, Skylight #1A, Red #25A, Blue #80A, Yellow #8, ND2, and ND4.
Celestron offers a complete line of telephoto lenses from 300mm to 3900mm telescopes from 1.2 to 14 inches of aperture, and a full range of binoculars from 8x21 to 30x80 sizes.
From the Popular Photography magazine (July 1981)
PMA 1981Celestron showed a prototype of their smallest lens yet, a very compact 300-mm f/5.6 catadioptric (mirror) design that focuses to 2.5 m (8.2 ft.). More unusual for Celestron is the fact that the lens is being made in Japan, rather that in their own facilities here. The lens should be available now, at a price of "about $200-$225."
Typical characteristics of mirror (reflex) lenses
- Catadioptric system consisting of curved mirrors and optical glass;
- Much shorter, lighter and less expensive designs than conventional super telephoto lenses;
- Outstanding correction of chromatic aberrations;
- Since the aperture is fixed, neutral density filters are used to obtain a smaller aperture;
- Doughnut-shaped out-of-focus highlights.
From the editor
The manufacturer of this lens was definitely the same as that of the Hanimex 300mm F/5.6 Mirror and other clones: both lenses have an identical barrel design right down to the markings on the focusing scale.
