Manufacturer description #1
With a length of only 22.5 cm and a diameter of the mount of max. 9 cm, this tele lens is compact and handy in spite of its focal length.
Even at full aperture the image quality is excellent for a lens of so long a focal length.
The Tele-Tessar T* f/5.6-350 mm is well suited for long-range and animal photography and for picture series. Like all lenses with long focal lengths the Tele-Tessar T* can be applied to achieve effects in the composition, e.g. to separate a motive from its background or to "gather up" the perspective.
Manufacturer description #2
Despite its considerable focal length, the 350mm Tele-Tessar is only 8.8 in long. This compact design and a relatively fast f/5.6 maximum aperture make the lens useful for many fields of practical photography.
The telephoto design is also unique in that the exit pupil is located far back. Its distance from the film plane is unusually short and thus all the rays emerging from the lens reach the film plane right into the format corners without any interception by lens barrel or camera body.
Even at its maximum aperture the 350mm Tele-Tessar displays exceptional sharpness for a lens of this focal length and design. Even pincushion distortion, which tends to be a characteristic feature of telephoto lenses, has been perfectly corrected. Thus, this lens is further evidence of the progress attained in the design of lenses employing new programs in electronic computers. The handy size of this lens, its silky-smooth focusing mount and efficient automatic diaphragm facilitate maximum utilization of the outstanding optical properties.
The 350mm Tele-Tessar can often be used without a tripod when there is a special need for mobility. It also keeps the photographer in the center of things. The lens is ideal for the news, fashion, animal and nature photographer among many others. The telephoto effect, which is more pronounced that with the 250mm Sonnar with its 30% shorter focal length, presents opportunities for interesting effects. If the background becomes distracting, you just open up the lens until its shallow depth-of-field throws the background out of focus. The photographer is thus able to concentrate on his main subject, which then stands out against the blurred background.
Carl Zeiss C series
The first generation of Carl Zeiss lenses with a built-in leaf shutter, introduced in 1957.
- Synchro-Compur leaf shutter with self-timer (V);
- Fully synchronized for M- and X-settings so that you can work with flash at all shutter speeds;
- Aperture and shutter speed are cross-coupled by default but can be set independently for complete creative control;
- Originally matt-chromed, all C lenses were supplied in black trim from 1969 to 1981;
- T* multi-coated from 1973 (30-80mm focal length range), 1974 (all focal lengths).
From the editor
Introduced at Photokina 1972. From the very beginning it was produced with a T* coating.
The CF version of this lens was supplied with a ⌀93 lens shade, which also served as a filter holder for ⌀93 filters. Screw mount. It also fits the 350mm and 500mm Tele-Tessar C lenses and makes it possible to use ⌀93 filters with these lenses instead of ⌀86 which are being withdrawn.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Carl Zeiss lens designation "Tele-Tessar" mean?
The Tele-Tessar is a true tele lens comprised of a positive front group and a negative rear element, i.e. a system whose length is clearly shorter than the focal length. It is a compact design which provides a small angular field and long focal length in relation to the image format. There is no similarity to the general design of the Tessar and is simply intended to utilize the popularity of the name. This type of lens is especially suitable for sports and other forms of photography where it is not possible or desirable to approach the subject. / Source: Carl Zeiss Oberkochen literature /
