Manufacturer description
A high-speed lens with superb image quality. The demand for a focal length of 100 mm is growing because of its many fields of application: portraiture work, snapshots, architectural and landscape photography. With its relative aperture of 1:2, this Zeiss lens permits short shutter speeds to be used even in bad lighting conditions. The low depth of field resulting at full aperture can be employed as an interesting means of picture composition.
From the editor
Perhaps this is the most interesting of the fast "hundreds" for SLR cameras: technically flawless, sharp and contrasty wide open, with deep color and excellent look, which is endowed with a magical degree of volume and lively contrast. In its design, this lens is flesh of the flesh of the legendary Zeiss medium format portrait lenses, such as the 110/2 for the Hasselblad, but even more improved in terms of sharpness and overall performance at wide apertures.
Zeiss provided the 67mm G13 Soft Hood for this lens. This rubber hood provides just the right amount of protection for the front of the lens. The hood can also be collapsed while on or off the lens, so the standard lens cap can be used while the hood is on the lens. The collapsed hood is nice and thin, so it can easily be stored in your bag or pocket until needed. An additional benefit is that the same hood can be used on the Planar T* 85/1.4 lens.
Notes
- The AE version can be distinguished from the MM version by the green minimum aperture setting on the aperture ring.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Carl Zeiss lens designation "Planar" mean?
The original Planar was a milestone in the development of photographic lenses since it was the first to offer anastigmatic flatness of the image field, excellent correction of spherical aberration and nearly total correction of chromatic aberration with a relatively large aperture. Due to the fact that the front and rear halves of this lens have the features of a Gauss telescope objective, it is sometimes referred to as a Gauss type lens. A design which is used by many lens manufacturers. Due to excellent and uniform sharpness across the entire image field, the Planar is a true universal lens. Its large back focal length makes it ideal for use with SLR cameras because there is no interference with the movement of the mirror. / Source: Carl Zeiss Oberkochen literature /
