Manufacturer description #1

Using the traditional Hologon ultra-wide-angle lens as a basis, Carl Zeiss has designed a 16 mm Hologon f/8 lens for the Contax G compact cameras. This interchangeable wide-angle lens is virtually distortion-free and provides superior image quality.

In view of the extreme field angle, a loss in brightness towards the image edges is inevitable. For this reason, a Contax gradation filter 4x is available to eliminate this effect.

The short focal length of 16 mm and the fixed aperture of f/8 of the Hologon T* lens often allow photography using the fix-focus setting. The wide field angle of this lens opens up interesting perspectives to the Contax G photographer: whether it is architectural, advertising, fashion or landscape photography, pictures taken with this lens will always capture the viewer's attention.

Manufacturer description #2

The 16mm ultra wide angle lens is the revival of a masterpiece of lens design invented by Dr. Erhard Glatzel. The Hologon is a simple configuration of five elements in three groups, providing almost completely distortion-free images despite its 106 degree angle of view. It is constructed quasi-symmetrically. The Carl Zeiss unique lens design to reduce the distance from the rear of the lens to the film plane enhanced the improvement of the contrast of this lens. The Hologon T* 16mm F/8 lens is provided with an exclusive viewfinder with a built-in water level, mountable on the accessory shoe of the camera body. A special 4X gradation filter is also supplied to minimize the effect of light fall off due to a decrease in relative illuminance in the corners of the image field.

From the editor

The Hologon does not work with the G's autofocus system; it is focused by scale (hardly a handicap considering the depth of field available with a 16mm f/8 lens). Also, the lens' deep protrusion into the camera body causes it to block the TTL meter sensor's view of the film plane, making TTL metering impossible. To handle this, the G cameras have a separate external meter cell (covering an angle of about 70 degrees) which is automatically engaged when the Hologon is mounted. The Hologon's depth also prevents TTL flash metering from operating; in the unlikely event you want to use flash with it you'll have to set your exposure manually.

Note that despite its enormous angle of view, the Hologon's deepset construction means it protrudes only 11mm from the camera body when mounted - making the Contax G almost a pocket camera. The GF16 viewfinder does not provide parallax compensation, so when shooting close-ups you'd need to allow some leeway to make sure the main subject is completely within the picture area - although with a 106-degree angle of view, the problem is more likely to be keeping unwanted subjects out of the picture area.

Included accessories: Viewfinder GF-16 (with built-in bubble level); gradation filter 4x (corrects for geometrically-induced light falloff at corners); front cap and special deep rear cap (GK-R2); Hologon case; cloth case.
