Manufacturer description
This Distagon® lens for Contax® 35 mm reflex cameras has been developed by Zeiss for all those who need a compact lens with an angular field of 74º and high image quality, but who do not require extremely high speed. This lens therefore meets the request voiced by many photographers for a lens with a relatively wide angular field and an initial aperture of f/2.8 which is perfectly adequate for most purposes. As the name Distagon® indicates, this is a lens where the distance between the last lens surface and the film plane is longer than the focal length, allowing unobstructed motion of the reflex mirror.
This lens therefore belongs to the class of so-called retrofocus-type lenses. The lens is a full-fledged member of the Distagon® family and displays excellent image quality and remarkable image field illumination even at full aperture. The distance between the first and the last lens vertex is exceptionally short.
Like its sister lens with a focal length of 35 mm, the applications of this Distagon® lens are so varied that it can be described as a universal lens for all fields of photography.
From the editor
Superb wide-angle lens designed by Carl Zeiss. Compared to the 21mm Distagon, it is quite compact. And although the sharpness at the edges wide open is weaker than that of the legendary 21mm, at landscape apertures (F/8-11) it gains such sharpness across the field that it may well be considered one of the best 28mm lenses for these purposes. In addition, the lens has deep color and excellent contrast.
***
Wide-angle lenses, especially the retrofocus designs, have often very large front lens diameters. Such designs are relatively short, but quite wide. Excellent performance is possible with this design approach. Zeiss however, wanted to avoid the mistake of the Contarex lenses where every lens needed a specific mount and every lens had a different size, which is ergonomically unpleasant for the photographer. Zeiss then tried to elongate the lens mounts: the lens barrel will be longer, but smaller in diameter. The lenses for the Contax RTS are based on this thinking and are indeed quite uniform in size and performance.
Zeiss provided two alternative lens hoods for the 28/2.8. The best choice is the Metal Hood No. 1 with 55/86 ring, which can be used on top of a 55mm filter. Zeiss also offered a G12 Soft Hood. The advantages of the rubber hood are that it provides better shock protection and also can be folded back and used together with a lens cap. The disadvantage of the rubber hood is that is cannot be used with a filter, otherwise it may cause vignetting. If you like to keep a filter on the lens, use the Metal Hood No. 1 with 55/86 ring.
Notes
- The AE version can be distinguished from the MM version by the green minimum aperture setting on the aperture ring.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Carl Zeiss lens designation "Distagon" mean?
The name Distagon designates a type of wide-angle lens with a back focal length longer than its focal length. While this is a design technicality, it is necessary in order to allow free movement of the deflection mirrors used in SLR type cameras. This design permits wide angular fields of up to 100 degrees with large maximum apertures and remarkable correction of all forms of aberration usually found in wide-angle lenses. Definition is excellent, even at full aperture. And there is virtually no focus shift when the aperture is varied. / Source: Carl Zeiss Oberkochen literature /
